How hot is too hot?

Post by delvryboy »

I know I ask the stupidest questions, but I have nothing to compare to.

My gauge doesn't go much past half way and the fan works, but if its 78 degrees or over, the bike gets plain hot. Tonight, after a half and hour, the entire tank cover was very hot. Hell, the filler cap was very hot to the touch.

You still have all the air deflectors? (the soft one behind the upper edge of the radiator that lays on the valve cover, and the ones that seal from the head to the side fairings)

I have NEVER had my filller cap be hot (or even WARM)

I've had the fairings off a few times and have never seen anything that "seals". I was out for 2 hours yesterday and I don't recall all of this heat. The whole tank cover was pretty darn hot.

I don't believe I have 25, 26, and 27. 20, 21 seems to be in place.

Yeah, I definitely don't have those. I'm not sure why that would make that much of a difference. Just a note: over an hour later and the tank and filler cap are still pretty warm. About that same temp as touching the cylinder head. In comparison, the exhaust is stone cold.

Maybe I'm just loosing my mind.

This answer is what i give to my clients on my gym, when they tell me the same thing:

I think delvryboy, as a filler cap means the one into the frame, over the valve cap and not the other on the expansion box. That on the frame it is logical to be hot when the bike is running. Mine, and every other's i have seen, are always hot when the engine runs.

Yeah, that's just weird.

It's 90° and humid here today. I just rode for an hour and a half...fuel filler cap/ring NOT hot, and I run a tankbag on top of it(don't know if that would insulate and keep heat in, or shade from sun and keep that heat off?)

Right, definitely not the sun as the bike hasn't seen day riding for over a week.

My cap would get warm, but not hot. But I also was running pods, no airbox, no airducts, and no side fairings.
