Simple question-gear clatter?
Its been so long since my bike ran that I dont remember. When rolling the wheels in neutral, is there a light clatter from the tranny? At first I though my chain was rubbing, then I thought the chain wasnt aligned properly on the sprocket, or the sprocket wasnt properly tightened, but all that checks out. Im still getting a tapping noise when the sprocket rotates and I cant remember if thats normal. I dont think so.

its most definately from the sprocket, not the tranny. Chain tension, nut torque, sprocket alignment do not matter, its always the same. Even tried a different sprocket for different alignment. No change. Im fairly certain its from the chain/sprocket engagement. this is a 14/47 520 setup. New chain and sprocket

I just saw this thread and was gonna say the mine did that after the PO let it get out of alignment for too long, with the chain a little too tight. Only thing that fixed it was replacing the chain and sprockets.

everything IS new. 0 miles on the sprocket and chain. tension and alignment do not affect it

Did you have a picture from the rear of the chain alignment?

this is all Ive got right now. It looks like its off, but its the angle of the shot. Alignment i dead on. But I swapped sprockets and moved them around a bit and the only difference it made was that it got worse when it was in stock FZR position. but that was to be expected with a YZF swingarm. Alignment in and outboard did not make any appreciable difference.

I don't know what to tell you, Freeze.
You probably already have all of these things covered, but the only things I can think of while brainstorming on this one are:
1. Is the chain too tight?
2. Could the alignment have gotten off a little when grinding/machining the swinger?
3. Is there any chance of the front sprocket moving around a little on the output shaft? (I know, likelihood is like 1 in 10,000,000 but still...)
4. Is the rear axle torqued to spec?
5. I know you already checked clearance, but is the chain contacting the rearsets or rearset mounts?
If the swinger itself is a little off, the chain may look aligned, but still be off to the "left" (looking from the rear). You could try pulling the rear axle and re-installing the wheel without the brake caliper bracket and see if it still makes the sound when slid a little to the brake caliper side. You could even try re-installing the wheel without the spacer on the cush drive side, and spin the wheel with the bike on a rearstand to see if it is indeed lateral alignment issues.
Once again, just brainstorming, so take it with a grain of salt.

Hey freeze, I wouldn't worry too much about it. I had the exact same thing happen when I first put on the YZF setup late last year. For the record, I have 45 tooth YZF rear steel sprocket, and 15 tooth Kawi 636 vortex steel sprocket up front (to align the rear end), and DID 520 xring chain, with perfect alignment front to rear, I verified this. Could just be the 520 setup. Mine made the same noise, and I've had no issues, or abnormal wear over 13,000 km now, which also goes to show the alignment is good. I was worried about it first, but to be honest, kinda forgot about it, and it doesn't make this noise anymore.

Good to know. I was hoping that was the case, because I cant really afford a new chain and Im gong to have to run the setup anyway.
