Can anyone help I have charged the battery full and rode with a friend and it killed the battery, It acts like its not keeping the battery charged while riding. Is this a cause by the rectifier not working properly or is it the stator cauising it. Please let me know, I am do to go on a bike ride this weekend.

If its the stock voltage rectifier than my guess is that it's the culprit. Do you have a multimeter that you can put across the battery terminals to see what its charging at?

If you haven't upgraded the VR, now would be a good time. They were a very poor design prior to 95 - overheating was a major problem.

A) charge it up on a low amperage charger (2amp or less) overnight. (make sure the battery's cells are full of electrolyte(add distilled water if necessary)
b) idling , the voltage will be real close to the battery's charged voltage (12.7 or so)
c) at 3000rpm the voltage should start climbing...and should be at least 13.2, 13.4..somewhere in there....and shouldn't go over 14.2 or so.

Take alook at you voltage regulator (under right hand seat fairing. if it looks like a tin can filled with rubber compound go buy another on e-bay for any late model yamaha and bin the old one.
If you look and it is casting with fins on then that is already been changed out.
Do as RR says and be sure to clean the ground connectors and the plugs on the VR and loom.

It was the rectifier, got a new updated one and it works great, it wasn't hard to modify either, no cutting just had to drill another hole for the rectifier. It looks good where its at. Thanks for all the replys and help.

I got a similar issue as you. I charged batt. up good now after it had died on me last night and drove it back home today but i disconnected the positive cable from battery while running and it killed out after acting goofy. I left my multi-meter at work to check voltage but i was wondering what year worked for yours, anything between 95-98?
