Transmission ticking noises

on my 98 fzr-600 everytime I pull the clutch back and put it into any gear WITHOUT engaging the clutch again I heard this ticking / rattling noise and it usually gets louder and louder as I go from 1--->6. If I let go of the clutch it gets louder.

Now I'm really hoping its not shift fork or drums and that it's just a sticky or a misconfigured clutch that is causing me these problems.

How can I check for a badly setup / maintained clutch?

**There is no chain on the bike atm
**I used 10w-40 (car) motor oil when I initially bought the bike.

The bike had been sitting for who knows how long when I brought it to my house

thanks

80% of this noise will disappear when there is a chain on the bike.

You are hearing the lash between the gears ("gets louder as I go from 1----6" ). That lash is damped by actually having a load on the countershaft.

okay that makes me a lot less nervous now. so should the lashing get "worse" (louder) when I let go of the clutch while in gear then?

and does 10w-40 (car) motor oil cause the clutch to potentially slip?

Um yeah don't use CAR oil in your FZR. Different additives and the what not.

nothing wrong with car oil. the manual recommends sae 10w30 or 20w40 depending on climate, of course they want you to use yamalube :whistle

That depends on what grade 10w30 you use they all have additives but some are not good for cork clutches I seem to remember a thread about oils etc. late last year.

Is it worth to shell out the extra money for yamalube?

In my automotives class we were discussing how a 10w-30 oil is a 10w-30 oil in a car, and the names dont mean shit. I don't know how that applies to switching between motorcycles and bikes though.

okay cool, I'm going to pick up some of that and was wondering does seafoam actually help? I was thinking of doing it when I change the oil

The white papers on seafoam are on the WIKI Tech book & URL page:-

put regualr white rotella in

there is nothing cheaper and not much better for dino oil.

and it doesnt have the shit additives most car oils do, 'energy saving molecules' == clutch slipping molecules

okay so i'm going to be installing chain/sprockets tomorrow. should I wait until after that to commence with the seafoam / oil change?
