I'm stumped

Two weeks ago I popped my igintion fuse. I tore apart my bike more times than I have been able to ride it looking for the problem. I changed out the vr and charged the battery. And after isolating a few wires that yeilded a potential short. I finally was able to get it to start again. I set my idle and let her warm up and eventually got her to purr.

So then it was time for a short test ride, considering I've already dropped 3 fuel pumps in this bike in less than 3 weeks trying to figure out the issues. I let her warm up for about 30 mind and the went to put it in first gear and it slammed in and died. So I adjusted my clutch lever and the spring mechanism on the front sproket cover. And I tried again.

This time it didn't slam in gear but it still died. I've tried second gear and same thing. My clutch switch was not working when I got the bike. And my kickstand switch is good. I've looked in the manual and it says to check continuity at the relay assembly on blue/yellow and sky blue. I got nothing. I don't know how to check my ignition box, nor do I gave the tools or place to check my clutch any farther than I already have.

I'm about to drop it off at a shop and tell them to fix it. But I know that will cost an arm and a leg. My old vr had a hole in it due to the previous owner neglecting any and everything on this bike. My neighbor did point out that my oil is low, but I'm told that shouldn't matter.

Any help on this is greatly appreciated. I've losing out on alot of time and money everyday my bike is down. I need to get her up and running again asap. Feel free to text or call me at 512-971-8543 if you care to talk more in detail. banghead

are you certain y our kickstand switch is good? I thought mine was one time too but it wasnt. When I hhad a short and burned up my cdi I removed the entire wiring harness and went through it all. It really only took about four hrs to repair and rewrap

It cuts off when you shift it into gear from neutral? You could have a bad kickstand switch or short in that circuit, meaning that your bike thinks the kickstand is still down and killing the motor as a safety precaution.

Yeap I'm sure it's good, I've had 3 people check it already. I'm going to drop it off at a guys shop and have him look at it. Tell me everything that is wrong with it so I can fix it. The previous owner(s) neglected this bike badly.

If it's been sitting a while your clutch plates might be stuck together. Since you said it slammed into gear I'm thinking this is what the problem is. I had that problem after my engine had sat for a year as I was rebuilding the bike.

The fix is fairly simple. Just put the bike on the side stand and remove the clutch cover (right side). You shouldn't lose much if any oil since it will all be on the side of the engine with the kick stand. Take the bolts out that hold the clutch springs and you'll be able to pull out the clutch stack. There will be a series of organic friction plates with splines on the inside interleaved with steel plates having spines on the outside.

Clean all the plates up with the steel wool and wipe them off real good. Put some fresh engine oil on each side of the plates as you put them back in. The steel plates are not symmetrical and need to be installed so they are all facing the same direction. The edges on one side kind of rounded over while the other side is machined flat. When you got to put boss back on there is a small triangle stamped into it which must line up with a circle on the basket. The circle can sometimes be hard to see but there is only one position in which the boss will sit all the way down into the basket.

The spring bolts need loctite applied to the threads then you torque them very lightly. I want to say it's 7 ft-lbs but I'm not positive on that. It's very light at any rate.

This should get you moving again but I'm not sure what (if any) your electrical problems are.

theres a long list of issues that i have had with the bike. apparently there is a guy here in austin who by magic i got ahold of threw some random email mix up. anyways i took the bike to him to have him take a look at it. i live in apartments and i already recieved a notice about working on my bike so i cant take it apart anymore. so thus i couldnt check anything but look at it and take my seat off, without breaking my lease.

come to find out the guy who i took it to lives right down the road from another guy who is trying to help me out. but the distance from him to i is to great for him to travel. but now that the bike is closer to him and at a shop with guys who know about bike. maybe they can figure it out. he's the cheapest guy who i found around. $40 for just checking it out. and he'll drop the fee if he does the work. $200 for new sprockets and chain, 1 down 2 up. which aint bad installed. plus he can do fab and body work. im thinking i found a new personal mechanic.

i checked everything in my ability. and got to the point where i just couldnt do anything else.

but thanks for your help. i know ill need it again in the future. i got alot more that ill be doing to my bike.
