Hey all, my 520 conversion I ordered will be here today and I had a question on the master link for the chain. It comes with a rivet style masterlink but I do not have a tool for the rivets so I was thinking I would just go to the dealership and buy a clip style master link. any opinions on the clip style versus the rivet style? There are a couple guys at work with sport bikes (ZX6RR and an F4i) and they both did a 520 conversion and used the clip style. For some reason I just get nervous about the clip flying off. Has anyone had issues with this? Any insight would be awesome as I want to get this installed next week with the new tires and Fox TC. I got the Vortex 14/47 with RK Gold chain from Sum of all Parts, is the chain length going to be the same as the stock 106 links? Thanks for the advice and I will get pics when I get it done.

You dont need tool.put it together as per clip style with open end towards you.Put dolly behind link and hit your side with hammer.
The open end has internal hole and will compress as you strike it getting fatter and your done.
i asked my bike shop to borrow there tool and they just looked at me funny then told me how to do it.
None of them had ever owned a link press tool.

either way, both my 1k's(including my 1040 kit'd one) had clip styles and they didnt fail

Finally showed up. So how many links am I going to need to cut out of the chain, they sent me a 120 link. Thanks

I'm sure that there's a scientific way to calculate it, but I just loosened my rear axle and axle adjusters and slid the wheel all the way forward, pulled the chain as tight as I possible could before I cut it.

As far as cutting/riveting, www.mikesxs.com has a cutting/riveting tool in his parts/tools section that's not too bad on the price (I think around $25 or so) and shipping is free for orders over $50. I've done both my chain and the chain on Bmillers' FZR/YZF superbike hybrid with the tool, and have definitely gotten my money's worth out of it.

Put it on the bike with the rear tire on the ground and measure what you need and then cut off the excess. Make sure that your adjusters are in the middle of your settings.
