where exactly is the oil filter?

is it the finned cylinder shaped thing above the headers with the 12mm head in the middle of it?

Yep. You've an 89 and those have the cartridge type and not the spin on.

might be worth it to get an adaptor from a later engine so you can use spin ons (way easier)

I just bought a cartridge type for $13, looks like they're $10 from bike bandit.

Removing the lowers and the exhaust isn't that hard if you're trying to save money, but the spin on does give you more filter options if you plan on keeping the bike a wile... The conversion is expensive compared to the filters, so figure how many miles you might put on the bike and see if it's worth it to invest in converting...
