How can i tell if i have a jet kit, and if so what stage.

Hello all, Im back and in action after being quite inactive for a long time.

First off my Fzr is a 1991.

Well anyways. I needed to rebuild the carbs bad and i have pulled them open and the jets kind of look like dynojet jets not like the stock jets from some pics i have seen. Can anyone post a couple bigger pics if they have the stock jets lying around or some dynojets or factorypros. Also if these are dynojets, which i think they are is there any way i can tell what stage jet kit it has.

One of the best ways to tell if it an aftermarket kit is to look at the needles. If they have a clip on them and notches so the clip can be moved then you have a jet kit in it. The Factory Pro kits have 5 notches and the Dynojet kit has 6 notches. The jet size is what determines if it is a stage 1 or 3 .... but don't quote me on that.

Just to add to CAD600 and Ragedigital's posts which cover the needle part of the equation - The stock main jets are size 107.5. So spit-shine one of them bad boys and grab a magnifying glass and have a look at the number that's stamped on the head. If it reads 107.5 - you know they're stock.

Oh, and Rage's pictures are a blessing when you venture into the realm of FZR carb cleaning / rebuilding! :cheers:

It looks like 108, 112, and 118 are considered Stage 1 with 126 & 130 considered Stage 3 (for running pods primarily).

Keep in mind that Dynojet uses a different numbering system than Mikuni / Factory Pro. So check out this link for comparable sizes between the two systems:

If you look carefully, you will see that Dynojet's 108 & 112 jets are actually SMALLER than stock FZR600 jets (< 102.5 & 105 respectively). The typical Stage 1 jetting is with the 118 which is equivalent to Mikuni's 110 (which is one step up from stock).

Ok well i think i have the dynojet even though it looks a hair different than the one in the pic. I will post up a pic of it later.

Haha yeah i will. I should get my gasket set by mid next week so it should be back on the road by the end of next week.

Ok well it looks like i have the dynojet needle. The main jet says its a 108 on it.. isnt that smaller than stock.

So is it bad that i have the 108 jets in. What are the downfalls

It means your main jets have been "leaned" down by a previous owner:-
because it was running rich due to
engine build
Altitude,
Temperature
Being fitted with pods instead of one central filter

As it is does the bike (with carbs synched ) pull well / run hotter than you expect .................

The bike runs real cold. It barely gets up over the Cold mark

I'm not really sure that running 108 main jets would alone be enough to do the damage but running too lean can kill the motor. As George alluded to, it really depends on the altitude the bike's running at. Thinner air will definitely allow for smaller jets to be run safely (and still have a good mixture).

I'll go a little firmer than Brandon's comment - if you are at sufficient altitude to warrant rejetting, smaller jets are not only ALLOWED, they are NEEDED to maintain A/F ratio. Install 'sea level' jets in Denver, and your bike will have a nuclear case of the staggers...
