Hey guys this is probably a dumb question, but I have gotten mixed answers so I figured I would ask. When you get a new chain do you need to get new sprockets even if the old ones look fine??? And is there a huge difference between an RK chain and the chep ones?

Some will say yes..some will say it doesn't matter. I'm one of those people who say "If you put on a new chain you should put on new sprockets front and rear". Just helps with wear and sets a baseline you can follow. They all wear the same and you will know how long you have before you need to swap in a new set. In my opinion, as long as the chain meets exceeds the tensile strength that is required for your engine size than the brand name doesn't matter. But there is definite debate about that.

I have always been told to replace sprockets when you replace the chain but I dont always do it. Inspect the sprockets and if they look like they need replaced then......replace.

the dealers will always tell you change everything cause they make more cash.

HOWEVER if you use common sense and clean and inspect your sprockets before using them with a new chain fine I have serviced bikes & machinery for almost half a century and i have done both as the inspection dictated.

back in the "old Days" it was probably because sprockets were of softer steel & case hardened for better longevity and once that VERY thin layer was worn thro then the sprocket died a VERY quick death

My advice is if you dont get new sprockets then dont get the dearest avaliable chain.
Go for cheeper chain on old sprockets(assume they look good)or full set if installing dearer chain.
the cheeper chains are ok but lube them as often as possible because there ability to keep dust and road grit out of the rollers is not as good.
