Post by jax »

Starter clunked on me pretty loud when i went to start it today. Starter giving out? Scared the crap out of me. I thought I locked the engine up.

i got a lead on a 05 YZF one. should I swap it out or rebuild?

i've never heard a starter clunk like that, could be a gear tooth issue. But you would have to take off your starter gear cover to see. If it is a gear thing i have spare gears lying around, and i also have a starter from an 04 YZF. If it clunks like that and then works fine then i wouldn't suspect it to be the starter, something major would have to be loose in there, and it's just an iron rod held in place by bearings, some brushes, magnets and copper wire.

Yeah, it turned a bit then clunked......then worked fine. I tried starting it like 5 times after that and all was good. I suspect the starter is fixing to go. I know this guy that has a yzf spare parts bike and he will sell me a starter for 25. Its worth a shot. I will get it and open up the peanut cover and see if anything is bad in there.

I've read a couple of old threads in the FZRarchives where this has happpened to someone else...
