Fuel pump, tank, and lights

Hey guys,

I'm new to this forum and I'd like to start out with a few questions about my 1993 FZR600.

My bike is currently not running. It needs a new fuel pump and gas tank (rust on the inside). In addition, my head lights, brake lights, and 3 outta the 4 directionals are not working (front right is the only one functioning). All of the fuses seem to be fine and my battery is charged.

My questions are:

Should I do a tank restore or get my hands on another one? (I saw the sticky on getting rid of the rust)

Would a fuel pump be safe to buy off of ebay, along with a tank if I don't do a restore?

And, what are your suggestions about my light situation?

It all depends on how bad the rust is. If its to an unsafe condition, then definitely replace it.

I would start here with finding a replacement pump. It's always better dealing with a member who knows what to expect rather than a motorcycle salvage yard.

I would get a voltmeter and start there with the light issues... check every wire.

with all your existing electrical issues have you checked your fuel pump by unplugging it and putting 12v to it? I would do that. I would also check my volatage regulator

I have not checked the fuel pump but a local shop did. They said it was only putting out about a 1/4 lb of pressure, versus the 12 lbs that is needed (is that right?).

I will check the fuel pump tomorrow, along with the wiring. Any suggestions how to go about getting at the fuel pump? As I have never taken it off my bike or the tank.

I took off the tank and pump. It turns out that the three directionals that weren't working had burnt out. I ran outta time today so I'm gonna check the tail lights and head lights tomorrow.

Any idea why those three woulda burnt out but not the fourth?

Turns out that all seven of the bulbs were blown. Still not quite sure why but at least the light problem is fixed.

Put a voltmeter on your battery with the bike RUNNING!! I'm betting your voltage regulator is malfunctioning. It should be between 13-15V.

You can use a regulator from a '95 and up bike. They are much better quality and rarely die. I got mine for 26 bucks off ebay. R6.

If your voltage is good, check voltage going to the pump. I just picked up a universal electric fuel pump that supplies 5-9 psi. Should work great and only cost me 50 bucks shipped new. I'm going to install it today and see how it works. It also fits in the old pump's area. Came with fittings and a filter too.

If you don't want to buy another tank, you can clean yours and coat it. The company is called Kreem. It will clean the tank and coat it with a hard gas resistant plastic. It works great and will never rust again. Its 34 bucks for the kit, might not be worth it if you can get another tank cheap.

Thanks a ton BAT! I'm prob gonna go with a used tank because I'm lazy. But I was thinking that the voltage regulator might be an issue as well. I'm gonna check it when I get a chance.
