Will not start - AGAIN.

Well, I've got the YZF engine into the frame. Have everything wired up. Got the Ignitech computer programed. Checked for spark which I do see. But it just won't kick over.

I've been able to get the thing to backfire. Last time, it happened twice in about a 10 second span. At the second one, I let go of the starter button and heard the thing suck air and fuel into the chamber. Sounded like a 90 year old smoker gasping for air.

But I can't get the thing to crank for more than 15 seconds before the battery just won't turn it over. Even if the thing is connected to the battery tender, it only last 15 seconds. The battery is being a little weird. If I put the volt meter on it, I get 12.5 volts right away. But if I leave the probes on it, the volts just keep climbing about 18 volts. :headscratch:

Anyone have an idea? Is the backfiring a good or bad thing?

you might have the carbs set to rich...
another thing, you might need the yzf battery...I put an a maintnance free battery that went to what I believe was an r6 and all it did when I hit the start button was my starter solinoid clicked at votex speed.
I would check carbs. connections...make sure fuel is on...check fuses...

oh yea, and check if it has an ignitin advanver and make sure your using the right fuel if it does...lol

Shred - don't get ahead of yourself.

I've got a YZF spec maintenance free battery. The fuses are holding. There is no ignition advancer. The fuel is fine as are all of the lines and wire connections.

I've been staring at this thing for 3 days, and routinely walk away for a while then come back and double check what I just did.

With the sucking and wheezing and backfiring I have to wonder - have you checked the cam timing?

OOH! You're working up an Ignitech - have you got the spark firing at the right spot? (are you firing the 1-4 coil when the 2-3 coil should be lit off?)

Timing is the first thing that popped into my head.

Do you have a timing light?

Good to hear you have spark atleast!

I've had my carbs so backed up with old gas the bike would NEVER start.

Don't know much about the yzf carbs but I would empty the float bowls, and if you're in the mood I would clean the carb assembly.

Sorry I wish I could help more. But I never trusted anyone's carb cleaning techniques, and they always screwed me over!

I would give the carbs a good cleaning and going through if it were me. Sounds like more of a lack of fuel problem from the way you described it.

I'm definatly not going to buy another engine.

I got a battery charger from Mark and I'm going to try that first to see if I can get this thing to fire up. The battery could be a cause of problem here. Then I'll move to the computer and carbs. The engine had only sat for two weeks I think before I picked it up. It has less than 5k miles on it so the timing should be fine. Not real sure when I'll be able to try it though as the wife and kid are both sick. Doesn't leave much time to work on the bike.

very well could be the problem. I can remember countless times where a battery was the cause of no-starts.

Im thinking that because he was having to wait 15 minutes each time for his battery to charge on the tender and then he would only get 10-15 seconds out of the darn battery. Hope it works my friend! If it does, buy yourself a new battery and a real charger!!!!

cad, put jumpers from a car to your battery and try starting the bike...when my battery was dead, this did the trick.
if it doesnt work, then its not just the battery
