I know, i should put a picture here, but i'll just put a 1000 words instead. What is the 2 1/2 inch stub that sticks off of the engine between cyls 2/3? It has the bolt on top of it and is bolted in either side, and it's underneath the gas tank behind the starter. I took it off of the YZF last night to see what it is, and there is a little plunger that seems that moves when the crank spins. It doesn't control anything. I've always seen it on the FZR and wondered what was under it. I've never seen anything like this on a car engine. Anyone know what it does?

It's the cam chain tensioner. It pushes on the topmost cam chain guide to keep the tension just right on the cam chain to keep the camshafts from getting out of time due to chain wear. Nerd
I bebuilt mine about 4 months ago when I did my valve lash adjustment. Be sure to plug that hole to keep dust out of the engine, and whatever you do, don't try to start the motor without it installed. You could kill every valve in the head.

ah, ok..that makes sense, and i haven't seen those on a car because of timing belts for one, and the chain isn't in the middle of the engine. Now that you mention it, the chain driven mid 90's maxima V6 has a tensioner like that. I think that's the only chain driven engine i've worked on. And trust me, i won't try and crank it w/o something like that in it. It's your head now.

Some have gears. I would rather have a cam chain though unless its a 1/4 mile bike.
