So close I can almost taste it!

so after countless hours and taking things apart and putting them back together, the bike is ALMOST there. after getting the timing the way it should be (thanks to the upside down japanese pictures in the manual), my dad and i almost had it started this weekend. now i'm down to the basics fuel, air and spark.

the old fuel pump would run until the float chambers were full and would then slow down and shut off. now that i've got the fzr400 pump on there (thanks darrin), it just runs and runs until the relay kicks it off. so my original thought was there was no fuel getting in the carbs (maybe the floats were stuck in the up position). so we pulled the carbs to mess with them, and the carbs are full of fuel. so my questions is, why wouldn't the fuel pump be shutting itself off once the floats are full?

secondly, we oiled each of the cylinders while we were in there and tried to mop up all the excess, but some might have stayed in there and fouled the plugs. so i'll be checking those out as well. when we first went to start it on saturday morning, it fired up for literally maybe 2 cranks and then acted almost like it ran out of gas before it could get running. so in my opinion, there's really only two things to check, make sure the spark plugs aren't fouled (they are brand new plugs, but may have gotten fouled in the starting process), or somehow its not getting the right amount of fuel.

anything else you guys wanna add? i'm mostly just posting to vent my frustration at how its almost done, but i appreciate all of your input, as i have in the past :-D

hope everyone's christmas/hannukah/kwanza was great! mine was pretty good, i got engaged to my girlfriend, so now hopefully she'll get off my back about spending money on the bike and not a ring canofworms

How's the battery? The coils good (pickup and ignition)? You're sure the valves are set correctly? Mixture screws set right? Good to hear you are finally close and congrats on the engagment.

battery is good, it's been sitting on a charger the whole time, pushing around 13 volts. coils i'll probably check along with the spark plugs. the valves didn't get touched in the teardown, neither did the mixture screws. those will be last on my list if fuel and spark are no good :shocker

i'm hoping i'll get some time early this week to be able to work on it a bit more, but i work sunday-wednesday till 6pm and its dark and cold by then. thanks for the congrats sweekster!

I'd defiantly look at the coils. Did you tare the carbs down and clean them as well?

Congrats on the engagement. But your wrong if you think she will stop nagging you about spending money on the bike. It will only get worst now as what's her's will stay her's but what's yours is now her's as well.

lol, true, but at least she wont bug me about spending more money on the bike than her for a little while.

when i pulled the carbs off, i sprayed most of a can of carb cleaner all over them because they were pretty grimey on the outside. aside from that, i didn't want to take stuff apart to really clean them, i just wanted to get the worst off.

Carb cleaner will clean anything. But it will also clog up things if it's not wiped off or sprayed with compressed air to dry it. Your air jets might be clogged now. Carb cleaner is also not very good for rubber seals and the needle diaphram. You might want to take them off the bike and clean them all the way out. Also, did you put a new fuel filter on it? What was the condition of your tank?

yeah i sprayed a lot of carb cleaner, but didn't spray with compressed air right afterwards, i did over the weekend though and everything seemed pretty clear. i'll check everything over since i've got the carbs out again now.

i did also put a new fuel filter on because i thought that may have something to do with it. the tank is in good shape, no junk sitting at the bottom, and no visible rust.
