Shift light

I haven't seen any thread on this so far....

I was thinking of putting a shift light on my bike set for just below redline....since I got the carbs working well again I tend to use a little more throttle than I used to... :whistle ....and I accidentally go past 11.5k once a ride.

I was thinking of using one of these.

Does anyone think it'll work standalone, or do you think I'll need a seperate rpm activated switch for it?

That one is a standelone light. It has a knob on the back where you select your RPM. Its got 3 wires: ground, 12v, and tach signal. Should work...i say get it and report back. This is something I wouldn't mind getting for mine either, but I wanted one of the skinny ones. Unfortunatly most of those require a seperate control module.

Should go to your CDI.

Thats a great price. Let us know when you get it.

What do ya'll think about a LED Gear indicator? I would like to add one of those to.

It probably is too big. 1.5" dia. x 5" long. The big thing would be that it has the rpm switch built in. At that price you could buy them and rip them apart for the rpm switch. The cheapest alternative rpm switch unit on eBay was about $45 last time I checked and wasn't adjustable.

In theory you could use any old bright LED or regular bulb and just use the unit to trigger at the right rpm. my2cents

that would be pretty kool if u could somhow drill a hole into the rpm tach and pop a led light in the middle and set it up to light up when to switch out ..
i like the LED indicators they dont seem to expensive but i like timing when to switch rather then being told or shown when to ..

If you look at the back of the gauge cluster you'll see a harness plug going into the tach. There should be the gray wire coming out of that harness plug and it should go all the way back to the CDI and remain the same color all the way through. You also can get the signal by wrapping the signal lead to the shift light around spark plug number one 5 times.

FZR600 section in our WIKI that contains the wiring diagram.

jeez its like a military control room in his dash. Anyway Im sure with some soldering and basic electronic know-how you could downsize to a smaller light using the internals from the previous mentioned shift light.

I hooked mine up but it didn't work. it could be broken.... :dubious: I took the casing apart to check the bulb and it wouldn't be hard to setup some wires off the light leads to a flashing led on the dash and mount the rest of the light under the seat... I found a trail tech Vapor dash kit  locally for cheap so I think Im going with that setup if I can afford it.
