Hey All
First time logging in, and I apologise in advance if all of these topics have been covered 1000 times before.
I have a '91 FZR600 which I picked up reasonably cheaply. I'm not a massive bike enthusiast, but do enjoy a ride, and use it as my main form of transport. It has been reasonably reliable up to now.
Unfortunately, as it's getting a bit long in the tooth now, it requires quite a few things done to it. Also unfortunately, there isn't a heap of these bikes still on the road out here (Australia), so parts can be rather exxy if heading down the new or straight replacement path.
What I'm looking for are some cheaper alternatives, that are easy to fit ---- read straight swaps - no fabrication!! Too time poor for that. Everyone is telling me to simply scrap this bike and buy something newer, but I think it's not a bad thing and I don't see why it should end up on the scrap heap.
Firstly, and most pressing, front brakes. My discs are both under thickness, and new ones are probably half the cost of the whole bike!! I'm not really looking for a performance upgrade per se, and don't really want to have to go to the trouble of replacing a whole braking system. My main question is are there any discs off a newer (more common) bike which bolt straight on? Preferably just the discs, but if there is a whole conversion which everyone is doing than whatever works!!
Secondly, rear brakes. Same basic question.
Thirdly, rear shock. I could probably stand to lose a few kilos, and don't mind either a passenger or a decent load of gear on the back so can anyone suggest a good swap for the shock/spring?
Lastly, there is an intermittent problem with the wiring where the tacho over-reads by about double, and the indicators flash eratically. Does this sound familliar to anyone?

welcome! nice to see another bloke from down under. whereabouts are you? I'm in perth.
For your brake discs, I am not too sure whether later models are a straight swap for the discs. When i had to change my rotor discs, i got a set of used ones from the forums. they werent expensive but you do have to take into account the shipping. even with the shipping, its a hell of a lot cheaper than used ones from the wreckers. They do pop up on ebay occasionally. Check this forum regularly.
As for the rear shock, do a R6 rear shock swap. they are much better. I myself am in the process of changing it over and it is bolt on. you just need additional spacers and dog bones. this had been covered numerous times in the forum and a quick search will yield many results.
As for the electrical issues that you have, thankfully i have not encountered them myself, but i am sure the very helpful people here will point you in the right direction.

I recently added a pretty complete brake rotor interchange to the wiki. click here. These are supposed to be direct swaps, according to the EBC Brakes part catalog. Maybe that'll help you find some new rotors.

Welcome Mr. Bob! As already suggested check the classified sections for good used rotors and post a "wanted" ad for what you need there as well. There are several rear shock direct replacements. The one that looks the most appealing to me the GSXR 1K from about the '06-08 era. But don't quote me on the date range. Do a search on here and possiblely the FZRArchives as the rear shock upgrades are common modifications. The last time I checked a new GSXR 1k rear shock assembly was selling for about $70 USD on Ebay. I know you're down under and shipping and import fees will likely drive the price up but maybe you can find the same at a local breaker if you know what year/model you are after. Also do you know if the original voltage regulator has been replaced with a voltage regulator from a '95 or newer FZR. Often time this is refered to as an R1, R6 or YZF voltage regulator upgrade as most of those models used the same component. If yours is still the original unit that could be the reason for your erratic electical issues.
