FZ1 Shock?

So is the FZ1 rear shock a direct bolt on? I've heard conflicting answers. Do you have to have custom spacers machined, or can you just use washers?
I'm assuming this shock would be stiffer than stock, but I believe it has alot more adjustment?
I'm wondering which would be easier to install, this or the R6 shock, which I believe has to have custom spacers machined.

you can use washers if you want
has more adjustment, better valving but a weaker spring
you have to grind a lil bit off the inside of the bottom of the stock spring to get it to fit on the FZ1 shock

So you have to swap springs?

That is correct. FZ1 spring isn't heavy enough to support the old fizzer. So unless you want to go spend money on a brand new spring, swapper in the FZR spring is the best bet. Needs a few millimeters filed from the top and bottom of the spring but you golden after that.

good day,
is the bike you did the fz1 shock swap on a 400 or 600?
is the 600 shock spring stiffer than the 400 spring?
the fz1 shock spring is listed as 7.6kg/mm. does anyone know the shock spring rates for the 400 & 600?
it was mentioned a few mm had to be ground off the fzr spring. is this grinding done to shorten the spring length or is it width narrowed?
thanks.

alls i know, is that i have a fz1 shock with fzr spring on my bike...no clue how it got there...its just there and im happy with it.
there is one problem though. I have custom bones that allowes me to either raise/stock/or lower the rear.
i have it set to raise the rear and the bottom of my shock touchs the swingarm and i believe its made a grove into it...but thats just a problem if you raise it...iv got probably 3K miles on it like that and its been fine...

I posted an answer in the other FZ1 shock thread a minute or two ago.

A write up on installation, gotcha's, and tuning is on the way.

i was wondering, does the ride height remain the same with the FZ1 shock - i would require the same height or even better if its raised up a bit. what do you think about the ride ht. with the stock dogbones?

That's one thing I checked when I did mine...ride height remains the same. Geometry stays the same. Makes it easier to figure what length dogbones you need to raise/lower your ride height, as it is the same as stock.

hi,
ride height remains the same - excellent info for me thanks.
it looks like it would be fairly simple to build / install some dogbones that would raise the rear.
how much shorter would i make the dogbones to raise the rear about 1/2" to 5/8"? anyone know?

not sure for that little of a raise....do you know how much of a shorter dogbone = greater ride height, then maybe i could do the math and get a rough estimate for what i'd like?

its in the wiki, I think its 2.4m raise per mm of shorter dogbone

of got the custom bones with three settings... for lowering/stock/and raising...mines set on the raise.
but yes, its in the wiki about how much hieght you gain per whatever shorter the bone is.
here ya go
