help on timing a fzr600...

Post by demon_knight69 »

hey all,

so i've been wrapping up my rebuild over the past few weeks and everything has been going quite smoothly. last weekend i went for the maiden start and she didn't fire. we determined the cause to be no fuel, looks like my fuel pump had crapped out. so darrin sent me two to try, and i used a fzr400 pump first. this pump is definitely working as there is now pressure in the system, the float chambers are filling, etc.

so we tried to start her up again today with no luck. after the carbs had filled to the appropriate levels with fuel, we tried turning it over quite a few times. all the carbs seem to have fuel in them, but in particular the number one carb is sopping wet with fuel. after attempting to start a couple more times i got sprayed with some fuel and the next time we tried to start the fuel in the carb ignited. sooo...... my question to everyone is, does this sound like a timing issue? if so, has anyone got any advice, or a good link for timing the engine?

when i was putting the engine cases back together and getting the cylinders and heads back on, etc. i was pretty sure i aligned everything correctly. we never touched the cams so i was very sure that the timing hadn't changed on the top end. but having moved the crank around a few times doing various things in the case, i'm not so sure about that. the book says to line the flywheel up with the matching line on the crankcase. i don't see any lines on the crankcase. the only line i see is where the case halves split. i'm pretty sure thats where we left the bottom end when taking everything apart, so thats where i lined it up to put it back together. all in all, this is very frustrating to say the least. i'm really hoping there is some other stuff to check before ripping the engine back out and taking the head off to mess with timing again.

sorry this has been a long post, but i'm trying to get a little frustration out, and make sure i give as much info as possible so i can get some help from you seasoned vets  thanks in advance!

"fuel in the carb ignited".......

Are you getting any rumble...any attempt at combustion besides this?

If it has an intake valve open when the plug fires...yeah, you have a timing issue. Whether ignition timing or cam timing is unsure as of yet. Have you double checked the leads going to the coils? Right hand coil gets the lead with one red/wht and one grey wire, the left hand coil gets one red/wht and one orange.

The 'T' mark on the crank was aligned with the crankcase halves (parting line)?

no rumble or any other attempt at combustion besides the fuel in the number one carb that ignited.

i haven't double checked the leads going to the coils as of yet, i'll make sure to check that.

the timing mark on the flywheel is (was) aligned with the crankcase halves, not sure if it still is, i'll be double checking that also.

It has to be lined up there while the cam marks are lined up like they are supposed to be, you know?
