Something Else is Wrong.. :( FTL

so after months of waiting.. first the fuel pump.. then the battery.. i finally jumped the battery, or attempted to..

i discovered 1) the battery is definitely dead - without the jumper cables connected to the running car, it doesn't even make any sound when i turn on the on switch, don't even have to hit the starter cuz there's no sound.. silence.. not even clicking..

2) THERE'S SOMETHING ELSE WRONG! :swear gah.. >.< so we connected the jumper cables, switched to on, hear the clicking, fuel pump is making its sound (i think), hit the starter, and it cranks but no turn over..

spark plugs were changed shortly after i got it this year... i'm not really sure how else to check anything more from this point.. o.O i'm not 100% sure how to check that the new fuel pump really is indeed working at this point either..

and that is my update.. i've failed u guys!

i guess it is now at this point i must somehow... push (???) the bike to a mechanic.. yarrg.. >.< banghead

question though: since i just went through something like this with my car recently for those who know.. should i go through the process of elimination similar to when i figured out what went wrong w/ that one? check everything within the ignition system (fuel, air and spark)?

Stator is bad. Might want to change the VR as well.

Voltage Rectifier. It is under the left rear seat plastic next to the two relays. Take a look at it to see which style you have. If it looks like a heat sink then it's the newer style. If is looks long an skinny it's the old style and you want to replace it. All you have to do is add a wire to upgrade. If it is the newer style, chance are that it is still good and not an issue for you.

How many time did you try to turn it over? Often if the bike has been sitting, there isn't any fuel left in the carbs to get the job done. You'll have to let the fuel pump do it's thing a few times. Also, there's a possiblity that your fuel may have gone bad also??

get a new battery, change the oil and fuel, get an r6 VR (stock fzr vr's burst into flames and suck)
my bike wouldnt turn over when I tryed jumping it too when the battery was dead you have to just wait for your battery to be fully charged.

sounds like the stator to me also, and a new VR is a good idea anyhow, they are not too expensive, and a very easy swap. also, dont, and i mean DONT jump the bike from a running car, very bad for the sensitive electrical system. there should be enough juice in a car battery to jump it without the car running. sounds also like your battery is done, walmart has a battery that works, i'll search around and see if i can find the number. it is pretty cheap.

Ok before you start replacing stators and VR's....check to see if you have spark. Do this by taking a spare spark plug and plugging it into ONE of the plug wires(keep the other connected) and lay the spark plug against the engine. Now go to start the bike and see if you can see a spark from the spark plug.

Also make make sure you turned your petcock into the ON position, incase you forgot to when you swapped over the new pump.

Agreed

Guys her bike is a 97 so it has the updated VR already. As been suggested, check for spark first. You probably just need new plugs since it's been sitting for so long.

and yes mista 'Ster - petcock was on.. ;)

banghead had no idea car did not need to be on.. >.< gah did i just boo boo'd something else then?

um guys

I dont see what the stator and VR have to do with the bike not firing.....

I would drain the carbs and get fresh gas in there, and check for spark

you shouldnt have seriousley hurt anything by jumping it off the car. ive done it many times, never with a problem. like everyone said you should check for a spark and drain the fuel from the carbs.

+1, the bike should still start, even if the VR is on fire; it might not run very long but it should start.

I agree with draining the carbs and getting some new gas in there. May also want to run some seafoam in the gas to breakup any residue that built up in the carbs while the bike was sitting; hopefully they won't need to be pulled apart and cleaned (did the carbs on the gf's shadow this weekend, the FZR is a bazillion times easier).

Also, when the carbs are empty you're going to have to crank on the starter for a while before it will turn over.

I'm not even going to suggest starter fluid, my flame retardant suit is at the cleaners.

here's some goofy shit that's been happening to me lately, very similar, with 2 big differences:

I just replaced the battery a few weeks ago, and it's nice and strong. Don't have any problem starting the bike for first ride of the day. Here's the problem: If i go ride the bike more than 15 minutes, then shut it off, then wait a few minutes and try to re-start, it cranks and cranks and cranks and cranks and eventually turns over, seems low on idle RPM for a second, then goes to normal. I get a feeling it's a "too hot VR", maybe after 9 years this VR is taking a dump. I think i'll just replace it, also i'll check the spark plugs even though they are only just over a year old.

:duh: :deadhorse: IDK banghead
