FIRE UNDER SEAT!

Post by fizzerboy »

So yeah im a newbie to the fzr scene and to be honest the bike scene totally but i have spent years on a dirtbike. Now what has happened is i bought a 94 fzr600 and it was kind of hacked together becuase someone attempted to build a stunt bike but never finished so i purchased and cleaned it up. before i even got a chance to plate it i was test driving it in my drive and attempted to just tool around on it and get the feel. i even took it for a ride around town and when i would get on it towards higher rpms it would bog down and then start to pick up but would do it slowly. (keeping in mind it sat for 6 months before i got it and all i did was clean the carbs a little not a rebuild.) Thinking it was fuel i was in the process of cleaning carbs and what not and assembled it back together. after sittin for 3 days or so i started it and waas letting it warm up and then i started to rev.....after about 5 revs i kept it reved mid rpms and noticed smoke under the seat. At first i though it was water on the exhaust from cleaning then it stopped so i reved again and more came so i reved higher and then i saw light....fire actually so i hurried and took the seat off and then i saw a flame from the voltage regulator. As the rpm's went up more smoke would come from the reg. If got high enough it would flame. Any ideas of what the hell this could be? Thanx for the help guys.

Welcome to the forum and welcome to the world of Yamaha FZRs...That's usually one of the first things to out in a blaze of glory on the 600. Swap in a one from a 95 and up FZR 600, or any year R6, R1, Yzf600, and you should be fine after. I'd suggest not running the bike until you do that so you don't fry anything else. Oh yeah..tell us a little more about yourself and post pics of your bike when you can.

Here's a how to thread on this very subject.

The stock VR's are shitty at best and if it was under your seat i would suspect it wasnt mounted to the heat plate. Either way everyone here replaces it with the later years yzf VR. The higher the revs the more voltage it made hence the growing flame.

Yeah well it wasnt like a ball of flames but it was a single flame and for something electrical to do something like that it must of been pretty hot. So i figured i would have to come to the experts....you guys haha. ive learned the best way to actually learn the most and get the most opinions is from a forum, im glad i found a good forum. Thanks for all the advice guys my next purchase is def a new r6 vr. Its almost winter time up here in michigan so im done for the season but trust me i already have plenty of plans on what to do with the fizz. My back ground is mostly with custom cars and custom painting, ive done it for about 6 years now but now that i got a bike im starting to notice all my attention going from my cars to my bike so i think i have a new hobby, maybe an obsession haha Anyways if you guys need any custom paint and body work or even decal work i can make you guys the decals you would like. You name it and have a file or picture of it i can make it. Just let me know! Thanks all

Baptism of fire huh, some welcom to our scene, If you look at http://www.saltmine.org.uk/fzr/project-1.html you can see the new style VR and what I did (just one of many solutions here on the forum)

As some one else said you will NEED to check that nothing else got screwed when the VR went OK
