I have a buddy bringing me gas and I HOPE thats the problem.

S,
is the fuel pump clicking at turn on?
It is also possible you have crap in the tank blocking the outlet + you could have crap in the filter .
Better check it out ASAP.as it could happen again even when new fuel dislodges it slightly

well, I filled the tank so its above that white tower-rod thing and the bike started right up.
i really need to check it though because my bike used to start when there was only that much in there.
and the inside of my tank looks kinda crudy, its not rust, but I think I should get the inside coated. do you know how much that costs?
I cant really do anything now because im in the hole $58 bucks.

S,
for God sake stay away from tank linings they are a horror waiting to happen.
Take the tank off the bike :-
The easy way is to wash the tank out with gas and some light gravel (0.25" stuff or lead shot) if you think it is rust.
mostly I have found it is crud from the gas if your gas station was low on gas or the dye they put in gas has settled out.
If it is rust (i pour the wash out onto a handkerchief stretched over a bucket to see) then you put washing soda (sodium carbonate ){NOT BI_CARBONATE } crystals and hot water in the tank & connect the tank to a battery charger and the other lead of the charger to a nail or other chunk of iron in the mixture in the tank.
This converts red iron oxide (which is active ie it will grow worse) to innert black iron oxide which is passive

Rust removal in pdf form can be read online or printed
This method can be used to stop any ferrous object from rusting !!! we used it on the farm for the inside of our wheel barrows that move manure from the animal pens and there is nothing worse than pig piss to rust iron !!!

S,
like I said tank linings are a flaming nightmare , get some kids marbles and lead shot and see what you can shake out, and be prepared to do it every couple of months OR get another tank (one of the listers does an alloy version )
