I'm trying to access the stator connector underneath the gas tank. Do I need to completely disconnect the gas tank to access the connector? I'm looking to disconnect as little as possible because I just need access to the connector.

Yeah it's best to remove the tank. Make sure you remove the handle on the petcock or you'll have a hard time removing the tank. Otherwise it'll take less than five minutes to remove the tank.

It might be tied up, but it should be accessible without removing the tank.

Like Duane stated, if you do have to take off the tank, then make sure you remove the petcock key.

Here is how I remove the tank:

1. Remove the side fairings and front seat.
2. Remove the tank cover (2 screws front, 2 screws fuel cap, 2 screws rear). You'll have to remove the gas tank cap to remove the tank cover. Put the ap back on after the tank cover is removed.
3. Unscrew the Petcock Key (phillips screw). Remove key.
4. Remove the nut from the fuel pump (10mm). Pull the fuel pump off the fuel tank.
5. Remove the front seat bracket that holds down the rear of the tank.
6. Remove the front tank bolt (10mm - use 6" extension)
7. Find a bar stool and set by clutch side of bike.
8. Pull tank up and out and set on stool. This allows you to keep all gas tank connections and doesn't disturb the air box.
