adjust carbs after changing headers?

Post by preset »

whats up guys, so i just bought some "vance n hines" headers for my 99 600 and they fit well and the bike runs and sound so good haha, but i have 2 questions on my mind. in the picture the bike is running a straight pipe, is this bad for the bike? next question, do i have to tune my carbs for this change? maybe the bike is running too lean or too rich now idk... could i adjust the rich//lean part of the carbs myself? or should i take it to a mechanic, i would rather have the bike run a bit rich than lean honestly so if i can take it to a mechanic to adjust this i would... if i need too haha. so what do you guys think?

Are you running it as per the pic...?

Surely a silencer /end can will be fitted ?

It is the fitted can that will determine the tuning required.
If no can is fitted it will be the judge or magistrate/police officer who will determine your fine and hopefully your jail sentence...lol.

It will be running like shite without a can to provide exhaust valve back pressure and will only sound fast...it will actually be slower...

You do realise the fact that is only the link pipe at the terminus of the 4 branch and it is designed to have a silencer/ can fitted ?

Yes you could get a GP pipe to fit...it needs some sort of silencer if you don't want your neighbours to firerape you.
That would probably fit in place of the link pipe..(what you call the straight pipe) A GP can usually has its own link pipe.

It wont really suit the style of the bike...you are attempting to dress up an old woman...it will look like a pantomime dame.
Oval medium length conventional cans suit these better and are cheap..plus they usually require no clarting about trying to rejet carbs.

What you try to do is find one that aligns so it is parallel with the seat bodywork lines and not set at some jaunty angle.
Its like matching everything for scale and looks tons better.

The link pipe is required to fit a silencer of conventional type..

yeah i had a sweet burnt tip vance n hines on it, but it wont fit with the new headers on..... its a shame woulda been a full vance n hines system :/ could you point me to some good looking exaughsts? the shorty pipe would look good if i cut the straight pipe a bit, i might do that. bottom line, if i get an exaughst with some baffling i don't need to tune the carbs? and if i do end up tuning the carbs could i tell the mechanic to make the bike run i bit rich? better rich than lean right?

If you are paying for a tune....the shop should have equipment to get the fueling nearly 100% correct but yes slightly rich is somewhat better than very lean.
Over rich is very bad as the excess fuel washes the lubrication from the bores and piston/ring wear is very rapid..

Why will the V/H can not fit.?
Adaptors are available that can sleeve the can inlet to the size of link pipe.

I doubt there is a std. charge for carb work...it will be per hour.
I believe you are in a different continent never mind country to me...I would have no idea of costing in U.S.
2 hrs would be minimum labour time for a decent job...anyone quoting less is only going to do a half arsed job.
