Howdy guys,
My name is Austin Verrett and I'm a senior engineering student at Texas A&M. I picked up my first motorcycle earlier this week and it happens to be an fzr 600. I am beyond excited about it, but being on a college budget I had to buy a project bike. This thing needs a ton of work and I have plenty of questions. I'm pretty mechanical and I've been turning wrenches on my pickup truck since I was 16. I know how to work on things but this will be my first time working on a bike which is something that I've always looked forward to. I apologize if I ask about things that there are already threads on but if you would point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it. Here we go:
The first problems that I noticed were that the bike has been laid down on more than one occasion. I need to replace the front fairing, windshield, headlight, mirrors, front turn signals and the tank. I've had trouble locating places to buy all of these parts and I was hoping y'all had some advice about where to look.
The engine ran great when the guy showed the bike to me but when I got it out of my truck it started once, I stalled it (I haven't ridden since I was a kid) and when I tried to start it back up it turned over a couple times and then stopped. Now when I hit the starter button I just get one click from under the tank and that's it.
Also, the wiring is pretty shotty. The lights won't come on and the tach just shows the time and doesn't really 'turn on' when I turn the key or start the bike (when it still started). It's obvious that this guy tried to modify the wiring himself so I ordered a used wiring harness online and I'm planning to remove and replace the current one.
These are the only problems I've found so far but I'm sure there are a few hidden gems that I will have the pleasure of finding in the future. Aside from the problems above, is there anything I should check to make sure it's ready to ride? Thanks a lot guys, I appreciate you helping out a noob.
