Clutch Cable replacement issue

Post by jax »

Felt my clutch cable let go a few weeks ago and I bought a new Motion Pro clutch cable. Part # 05-0145

Confirmed that yes my cable strands were starting to snap ay the lever and installed the new one. At this point I took the cable cover off and cleaned up and re-greased the actuator assembly. I go to put everything back together and something is wrong but I can't figure out what it is. I cant get the cable to work unless I back the adjustment screw at the lever out to where it only has a few threads left. Any ideas?

There are a few scenarios here.

Firstly; is the cable inner the exact same length as the old one ?
(Do not take the makers description for granted...mistakes in production occur. Do a visual comparison
I just went to fit a cable bought for an R5 6 mths ago at the weekend; its miles wrong !)

Next.....did you remove the metal activator assy. from the plastic splines when you cleaned the mechanism ?
You can refit it in numerous positions which will alter the cable angle and hence length.
(That part looks right though...going by the return spring position in the pic.)

Thirdly; When you refit a cable or remove that casing, it is sometimes necessary to reset the pushrod clearance.
I know in theory that this should not be required.....the casing and the pushrod are the exact same parts !
In practice it often needs resetting , often how much readjustment required is surprising.

That activator mechanism has been fitted to Yamahas since about 1971....it's good but has a few quirks.
I got shot down on here years ago for advising to check the steel ball that is "trapped" inside the mechanism.
Someone tried to state that there was not such a thing...what you could see was the rounded end of the adjuster screw !.
From your pic . it appears to be in situ.....sometimes they get that worn that they fall out and are lost when the casing is removed.

Try setting the clutch lever adjuster somewhere near half way of its adjustment first and then do the pushrod clearance.
Sometimes this can be the only way that a satisfactory feel and setting may be obtained.

Addition;
Do check that the nipple is fully home in the actuator clevis.

Thanks...........I'll have to start over and remove the new cable to compare. got busy over the weekend and didnt get a chance to finish it up.

Yes , I did remove the activator assembly. Don't recall it having any plastic inside it. The part that does the twisting is metal grooved and the casing part has small ball bearings inside it. I cleaned all that up and used high temp moly grease when re assembling.

I'll preset the mechanism again to make sure before making cable adjustments.

Thanks for the tips. if that dosnt work I will report back.

Found the issue willandrip. The motion pro cable is about an inch too long. Plus the part that engages in the clevis at the actuator is too narrow.

I'll have to find another cable. Probably just go with a OEM cable. I'll try to contact Motion Pro but being how I bought it on eBay they probably wont give a damn.

Appreciate the response.

It often pays to compare replacement items if not from the OEM .

Easy fix even if somewhat annoying.

For sure. I sent an email to motion pro as they say they stand behind their cables. Only way I can get it to work would be if I can find a adjuster bolt for the handlebar that is about 2 inches long on the threads. I'll wait on them before I order a new OEM one.

The cable you bought was mislabelled/described by either Motion Pro or the Ebay seller .

Have you a link to the ebay listing ?

Actually the cable is correct. It is labeled 05-0145 but was old stock dated 05/12. I called Motion Pro and the tech checked the cables they have and found that there might be an issue with mine. They are sending me another one for free.

Here are some pics of my cables. What is screwing me up is the overall length. The end piece at the cover doesnt fit as well either.

If it were me I'd just get the right cable from your dealer. P/N 3HE-26335-01-00 $19.60 at RonAyers.com. Don't monkey around trying to make something work when the part is available. Save that creativity for when you are restoring vintage motorcycles and the part is NLA and the repop market hasn't caught up with your needs.
