'93 FZR600, starting problem

I bought the bike on Monday(7-20-2015). Once I had my registration all set I took it out for a rip and everything was fine, started up right away no issues. I rode it to work the on Thursday. The bike started up no issue in the a.m. when I left for work and started up no issue in the p.m. when I left work to go home. On my way home I stopped at my parents to say hi, I was only there for a short time so I left the key in the on position and the kill switch on "run". the engine was not running when I went inside. As I was going to leave I came out to start the bike and there was nothing. No click, no turn over, no neutral light, nothing. I thought I killed the battery. As my mother and sister were the only two around I didn't try to pop start it right away. I did some quick research to learn how to jump it with a car. I DID NOT turn the car on when I tried to jump it because I read it can cause damage. After a few failed attempts a neighbor saw me struggling and came over with a battery tender. We tried to charge it for 10 minutes and still nothing, he tried to help me pop start it and it still would not start, even though it sounded like it wanted to the ONE time we tried(he told me to put it in third, even though i argued that it should be in 2nd, regardless it shouldn't make too much of a difference right?). After all this I realized the battery was super hot so I disconnected the leads from it. Out of frustration I quit working on it. Saturday I went and bought a new battery as i found the old one was only holding 5 volts. I hooked up the new battery after a few hours of charging at Motorsports International and still nothing. No lights (not even the neutral light), no turn over, no clicks or anything. So ran out and replaced the four fuses under the seat for the ignition and whatnot. After that still nothing. So now i'm sitting here feeling completely defeated. I'm mechanically inclined, resourceful and willing to learn a lot about the bike and doing my own repairs. I just don't know where to go next. A lot of the research I did is leading me to thing it could be the Voltage Regulator(fzr's are notorious for these failing), stator, the ignition switch or faulty wires somewhere. There was a lot of electrical tape and butt splices. SO am I in over my head here? should I take it to be serviced? Or is this something that I could troubleshoot on my own and replace another part or two to get the bike running? ANY advice is appreciated and much needed.
