Gas tank holds 4.8 US gallons?

Stock '92 FZR 600...manual says gas tank holds 4.8 US gallons then lists the Reserve capacity at 0.9 US gallons. I interpreted this as 5.7 total but ran out of gas and had to hit reserve right under 3.9 last night...am I correct to now assume that 3.9 + 0.9 reserve = 4.8 TOTAL? Makes a big difference when planning for fuel, getting ready for my first road trip. Thanks in advance.

Yes 4.8 is correct. They always give you the total amount which includes the reserve.
