91 revs out on its own... PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Post by jbrunell »

ok so i get my bike to start n it idles nicely for about 30 secs to a minute the revs way out without touching the throttle(throttle cables arent even hooked up). im pretty sure i have an air leak somewhere. i took off the carbs and cleaned them thoroughly.took off the boots from the intake manifold to the carbs and inspected them. there were some cracks on the outside of them but none that went all the way through. now between the manifold n the boots, should there be a gasket or even that liquid gasket stuff to make sure there is an air tight seal? and if its not the boots that are leaking, what should be my next step to find the air leak??

Thanks for your help in advanced. hope to hear from someone as soon as possible. riding season is coming up quick and i would like to get this sucker running for this season...

Thanks Josh

Josh, is this a new problem for you bike or one that has happened since a recent amount of service?

You say the throttle cables are not even presently attached. Is the choke cable? If so is it possible that the choke is engaged/on.?

Are you supremely confident you reassembled the carbs and jets properly?

What float heights did you measure while you had the carbs apart for cleaning and what were the jet sizes?

Are all the clamps tight/snug?

According to online fische sources there is no gasket called for between the intake boots and the cylinder head.

With your motor revving so shortly after starting it will be hard to use products like WD-40, carb cleaner or propane to identify the source(s) of the air leak if that is what you are dealing with. But typically applying products like these (and please remember they are all flammable) around the intake and carbs are typically how you identify air leaks as the rpms will increase when the additional fuel source finds its way past the leak and into the combustion chamber. Only use these products on a cold engine, outside and with a fire extinguisher close by.

I just bought it a couple weeks ago n was told it was completely rebuilt. I got it running n everything seems to be working fine other than when I rev it the rpms hang there and I have to turn the idle screw all the way out for them to come back down then turn it back in to keep it at idle so it won't die. Haven't checked the float heights inside the carbs yet. Probly my next step

The jet sizes were 52.5 and 110.

It's been a minute since I've been in my carbs but did you get the slides in right? What is making the slide rise and introduce more fuel that you have to in turn back the idle screw out for the idle to fall and then readjust to make it idle. With the throttles connected (both) what happens at start up?
