FZRSupport: the FZROnline Archive

Hello all,

This is my first post so please try to understand I am not familiar with this bike.
I bought my wife a 1998 Yamaha FZR 600 last year to try to convince her to convert from her Intruder to a sport bike. I lowered it for her last year and she enjoyed it... except for the exhaust sound.
For Christmas I bought her a Vance and Hines SS2R slip on. I went to put it on and when I was fitting it up and the pipe from the collector to the muffler was wrong. I called bike bandit and they shipped me one for the YZF... not the FZR. I sent it back (had to eat the cost of shipping) and ordered another. I got the system and now I have another problem. Although it is says it is for a FZR 600 (Part 15513) the V&H pipe slides on the collector but has no room for an exhaust gasket. .... also, the pipe going into the muffler is smaller than the hole in the muffler by maybe 1/8 to 1/4 inch.
Now I have V&H on my Firestorm, but I used exhaust gaskets and everything fit tight. I talked to Bike Bandit but they say it is right and I talked to V&H and they say it is the right part #, muffler number and pipe number, but it could be wrong.

Now I figure I might be able to expand the pipe to fit tight in the muffler, but I still won't be using a collector gasket.

Do I need a collector gasket? V&H says I don't...but...do I?
Anyone ever had this problem?
Any opinions if I should just expand the pipe to make it fit the muffler?

I'd hate to send it back and eat the postage again just to get another "wrong" exhaust.

Any thoughts or opinions would really help.

Please read what you wrote so somebody can help you. If I'm reading your post correctly, you bought a V&H slip on for your FZR600 and it came in two pieces. The first piece is the mid pipe (from collector to exhaust) and it fits on the collector with no room for a gasket. This is correct as it is the same on my FZR which has the V&H Supersport exhaust (not the SS2R). The second piece is the muffler and the midpipe is 1/8 to 1/4 inch smaller than the exhaust opening. Isn't there a clamp or something to connect the two? Instead of trying to expand it you might want to declare it defective and return it. There has to be a free return policy for defective products.

I sent back the exhaust yesterday and I hope that the one they replace it with will all fit right. The muffler to mid pipe connection is held together with springs so that connection has to be snug.

Thanks for the info on not being able to use an exhaust gasket. Every system I have had used them, so at least I won't be wound up if the replacement that will be sent... doesn't.

It still angers me that this is the second system that doesn't fit and I have to eat the postage to return them.

That return postage thing is messed up.

I am not 100% certain on this and I know I'm chiming in with the following a little too late but, the only full system made by V&H for the FZR was the Supersport. It came with a header and a one piece midpipe through muffler, so 2 pieces in total. I am guessing that they are sending you an individual midpipe for the Supersport system and then an SS2R slip on which do not fit together. If you can get the Supersport (there are a bunch on ebay, some of which are in pretty decent condition) system I recommend that. It comes with a bracket to mount to the foot peg and of course everything lines up. I don't think you can get the Supersport new anymore, but if you can, you might want to do that.

I found out that V&H made the SS2R but there wasn't a lot of them made. I am going to try once more and get the system and see what happens this time. If it is really wrong, back it goes and I'll look for Supersport system.

I love the SS2R sound on any bike I have had.

They did make a full SS2R. The headers were stainless vs the mild steel of the supersport. and then you had the midpipe and slipon. I have a cut down slip-on SS2r that will be for sale shortly if you get no luck with them.
