96 fzr 600 just purchased today!
Hey everyone! I'm new to this site and yamaha in general. I just bought a 96 fzr 600 and I'm replacing the battery tomorrow I had it running today with one of my batteries fron a previous bike that wouldn't fit in the case. (My luck of course)Anyways im planning on some customizations such as a r6 or r1 tail conversion. What's the best year to use? Also I have a little cleaning up to do such as some minor electrical fixings (bad splice jobs) to easy, and possibly a new petcock mine is leaking pretty bad when turned anywhere but off. Can someone tell me the petcock positions as well? I'm a previous cbr owner and mine had a reserve. From what I read there is a prime selection on yamaha? Also I plan to do a shorty pipe for exhaust is it safe to take off the junk stock sounding slip on the P.O. put on it? Its not even sealed and I want some rumble but not at the expense of my motor. Thanks in advance and I hope to get a lot of information and ideas from everyone in the future as this will be one bad ass ride once I'm finished.

Another member had this printed up; gives in idea provided the original tap is fitted.
No prime position; they are not vacuum taps.

When and if, you remove or fit an unknown tap ; put a length of pipe on the outlet and blow through it with the lever in the different positions. This will tell which is which; some of the 400 (Genesis/3EN series) taps are identical but the res. and on
positions are reversed/different. A s/h tap could have been taken off anything.

Im beginning to think after the fuel leak and the petcock problem I might have left it on all night so im wondering if it may be flooded or something its dark now though and I don't have the luxury of a garage so I guess I will try again tomorrow and hope that's what it is and the bowls dry up a bit otherwise I may be in for some actual work on this thing

Re: 96 fzr 600 just purchased today!
Ok so after my last post as I was searching through some posts and some different custom sites and such I started picking up my tools and decided to try starting it again and low and behold it started. At first it was running at a high idle and after about a minute tapered down some and began running at a decent idle. Shortly after it died I started it back up and it ran fine for a few seconds and then died again it doesn't want to stay running for long but at least its one milestone accomplished. After looking around at the leaking petcock I noticed some things that looked wrong the fuel filter was just hanging with only one hose connected but no fuel leaking? Then I found what im assuming was a fuel pump behind the right side fairing under the tank and in one of the lines was what looks like another fuel filter but not one I have ever seen. Now im not very good at fuel systems but im great at deductive reasoning and I'm guessing they bypassed the old fuel pump and left the old filter and such to prevent fuel leaks probably bc they either A couldn't afford the right one or B couldn't find the right one and bypassed it. Evidently its working but I'm trying to figure out why it wont stay running I'm assuming its something with the carbs but I don't know anything about carb work so im in need of assistance. I tried to explain what's going on to the best of my knowledge but after seeing the patch job fuel pump im now wondering if the carbs are even set up correctly can someone send me to a link of how they are supposed to be or something of the sort? I did take the air box off and look at the tops of everything and it was surprisingly clean. This bike isn't a total basket case but im wondering if I bit off more than I can chew im hoping you can all help me bc I really like this bike and once I get it running correctly I can begin doing what I bought it for and start customizing it. This is my second custom bike and I love doing it but im not very good with the engine aspect so PLEASE HELP!!!!

Hi,
The fuel pump is visable from the right and you will know if it is working as it "ticks" when you first switch on your ignition only for a couple of seconds as it "primes"/ tops up the float bowl of the 4 bank carb set.
Starting and dying is common for someone not used to the very "cold blooded" FZR engine. I have run them in Tropical heat and snow and no matter what the bike needs to be started with the so called "choke" system. The bike will start and run at 3K revs like this ,let it settle to a distinct beat i.e not popping then slowly reduce the "choke" to run at about 1700 RPM. I ride for may be 5 mins at this RPM at idle you will hear/ feel the engine settle down then close the "choke " system down. It took me acouple of days to get used to this in the tropics and it came naturally when I rode in the cold.
Idle should be about 1200 RPM if my memory serves.
Before you spend money on conversions go thro the old mail & MOST IMPORTANTLY the WIKI save you endless cash & frustration you can also read my adventures with owning my FZR 600 on my website . for details on the best value for money sorting the old suspension & brakes system.
To the rest of FZR Online I was woorking on the ole girl yesterday and the new indicators & battery work fine and she tumbled into life.
(new indicators as some pond life had knocked the bike off its stand and picked it back up and not said a word ! )

Oh I'm sorry I forgot to mention as I looked deeper to the base of the petcock I saw that it was engraved on the base of the unit and this picture with the sticker is the correct one so im assuming I was right when I left it on all night which is why it was flooded and wouldn't start forever thank u all and yes George that's pretty much exactly how it acted.

drying out the bores is going to be a pain . Gas off and a very good battery.
Please do NOT do as I saw a young guy do the other week and take the plug out and tumble the engine with ignition ON..... good for starting a forest fire !
Glad to see my memory of the FZR is pretty clear hee hee. You get used to its funny ways. If you read my web stuff about what I did with mine you will see what can be done to a good bike to make it a great bike , like adding lift buttons to the swing arm and the front shock mod.
Have fun if you get stuck with a problem ask here ! As I used to tell my students and the guys here "the only stupid question is the one you did not ask, because you will never know the answer "

Re: 96 fzr 600 just purchased today!
Omg every bit of light that sheds on this bike I find something new screwed up its running pretty good im thinking I need to drain the tank and put some new gas in I actually rode it for about a mile today and rides great but as I was riding I lose all power and I was like wtf then I discovered that one of the wires on my ignition had came unsoldered and was barely connecting...aaaahhhhhhh its annoying but easy fix its an old ignition has been changed once before so I'm just gonna purchase a new one and put it on tomorrow and the mirrors and a license plate light and then its ready to be inspected and tagged. Wooohoooo but only one issue after that sometimes when I give it a lot of throttle it doesn't take off but kind of Boggs down and I let off and its fine. Should I adjust my idle screw or fully take the tank and air box off and go for a bench sync on my carbs? As I said before they look to be pretty clean im just wondering if maybe its dumping to much fuel or maybe im not getting enough spark. Suggestions please. I'm so ready to open this badass up and put some wear on these new tires thanks in advance
