nail in tire

I have a nail in my rear tire. The tire has great threads on it, but the nail is in deep, and causes a very slow air leak. I was going to take it to the tire shop to get it patched, but can't I just drive it with the nail in the tire. Its on the side not the middle.

The tread can be patched - sometimes, carefully. The carcass / sidewall cannot be patched. There's just too much flexing.

damn. i was trying to avoid buying a new tire. the tire i have now is a 160/60/18 which are high.
