I have a complete air box for my fzr but the boots that go on the carb throats are out of shape to use. A guy before me tried to use a heat gun to soften them but he melted them. Instead of buying brand new boots for 60.00 I was going to buy a used air box and use the boots from it.

Do these look like they can be used.

Heating them in water works, but is a one-shot deal. Boil them in COOLANT; it has rubber-conditioners that prevent your hoses from getting stiff and cracking and failing catastrophically under full pressure, spraying boiling green stuff all over your legs. :yikes: This will leave them soft(er) and more pliable for quite some time to come.

Get a cheap crockpot off Craigslist or something, and let it simmer overnight. Don't use it for food ever again ... :yuck:

OK so you saying if I use the hot water method, it will only work for that one time and need to be repeated every time I take my air box off. The coolant method will hold out for quite so time?

If you Google up "Wintergreen oil/carb boots" you should find some interesting posts on how others have reconditioned inlet rubbers that simply are NLA.
The original material has some ingredients that simply evaporate over time, petrol acts as a solvent and also heat accentuates this, the boiling in coolant or wintergreen oil replaces much of the lost suppleness.
