installed new vrr, is this normal?

So my old stock oem vrr failed low so I replaced it with a 1998-2001 r6 vrr. I installed it using dontz125's adapter. So I turned it on and measured the voltage. It's idling at 13.9 Volts (headlight on). But when I rev it and hold it at a certain rpm (can't tell what rpm tachometer never worked), the voltage drops to 12.9-13.4 range. I only had the bike on for a minute and the vrr was hot to the touch.. Is this normal? Did I buy a faulty vrr? I've read the other forum posts and everyone seems to agree that I should be outputting somewhere in the 14 volt range above 3000 rpm at any given time.
-Thanks

Remind me, please - where did you attach the ground lead?

I couldn't attach it to the main ground by following the negative cable, the bolt won't come out since the flat part of the bolt gets caught onto the frame. So I connected it to a bolt right next to it. It's the same piece of metal, so I thought it would work.

Here, before I put the ground in.

That ground point should be fine. It sounds like you've got a failed-low regulator, and the system can't keep up with the ignition as the revs pick up.

Darn...I just bought the Vr brand new....would that explain why after only 1 minute of idling/revving the VR would get super hot?

Unfortunately, yes - the VRR is continuously dumping too much power, so it gets hot.

Update:
So I ran through the diagnostics flowchart
http://fzronline.com/wiki/lib/exe/detai ... sion_3.jpg
and here are my findings (with the bike turned on, rpms were around 3000, maybe a little higher)
1. Battery read 12.4 volts
2. With the Voltage Regulator disconnected and the engine running, while measuring AC volts and trying all possible combinations of the 3 wires. They all read between 62-64 volts, lowest was 61.4.
3. I turned off the bike and and checked the resistance between the combination of 2 white wires and they all read .6 ohms. ( Alternator/stator is faulty?)
4. I don't know what it means by measuring between the negative battery terminal and post. Does it mean disconnect the negative terminal and measure from the battery to the connector?

1. A little low, but you've been starting and stopping without giving it a chance to charge up. Not bad.
2, 3. A stator putting out 61-64vac on all three legs is not faulty!
4. Correct. You're measuring the leakage current; this has to be done in-line.
