1993 FZR 600- from ground up

Post by schiebz »

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum and just recently purchased a 93 fzr600 from someone at a garage sale. I purchased the bike for 200 dollars but the thing is.. it's completely disassembled. The engine, tranny.. everything is in pieces and in boxes. Now, I decided to buy this bike because of a few reasons, the tires are brand new, and my dad says he is willing to help me fix it up. My dad is very knowledgable with cars and engines so he thinks it will be a fun project to help me with since I know almost nothing about putting an engine together. Now I figure with buying a service manual him and I will be able to get this back together in the next year or so.

The reason it is taken apart in the first place is the guy said something about how the shift fork went out and it wouldnt shift into gear and the guy helping him moved out of town so he got stuck with it in pieces, and decided to sell it. So my question is, are there any things I need to look out for while doing this whole project?

Welcome to the board. Wow, you really jumped in with both feet. In addition to a manual you can buy in a store, there are free downloads of the manual available online. I thought we had them in the Wiki. Give it a glance, the link is at the top of this page.

Good luck.

Thanks man.

I started today by getting the parts cleaned and looking the boxes to see what all is there. I havent been able to locate the carburetors in any of the boxes the guy gave me so I hope thy are connected to the frame underneath the gas tank or something.. does anyone know how much a new carburetor would be if I need to buy them?

Also, I may need to send the heads to a shop for them to set the valves because im not sure my dad feels comfortable enough for that part since when I was cleaning the head some smaller cylinder looking pieces fell out along with some smaller circular pieces with numbers on them. Not sure what these are called but does anyone have any input on any of this?

Hi ya,
I think FZRBrandon on here has a couple of carb banks for sale....he is very reasonable. The cylinders that fell out sound like they are the valve buckets and the disks with the numbers are the shims. I'm sure if your dad is mechanically inclined you guys can do a valve job. Get your manual, some feeler gauges, some valve paste and a dowel( used to seat the valves) get some viton valve seals. Read up, ask questions here... Some uber knowledgable people on this site. Just think you'll have the sense of accomplishment that goes with doing it yourself. Just take your time don't get impatient.

Project going well so far. I believe my piston rings are worn although, which is not good. Does anyone know of a place to buy these at a decent price?

My dad and I will be starting to put this engine together shortly. We are wondering what the best sealant for the case is. I was looking at this stuff called yamabond but there are different varieties of it. Does anyone have any suggestions on what the best stuff is for this?

We are also wondering if any seals on the whole product need extra sealant. Thanks for any suggestions!

...The reason it is taken apart in the first place is the guy said something about how the shift fork went out and it wouldnt shift into gear and the guy helping him moved out of town so he got stuck with it in pieces, and decided to sell it...

Before you get too deep into this project (If its not already too late) let me ask you this... Do you have a clean, transferable, Title for this Bike?

If not... Then do not spend another penny on it, until you talk with your local DMV to determine whether or not you can Title the Bike in your name. If you can't, then you need to start looking for another Bike or Frame with a clear Title.

If you do have the Title, then carry on & ignore my previous ramblings. You might want to keep your eyes open for another FZR Parts Bike though. Or advertise on Craigslist that you are looking for FZR Parts. You can probably find another Parts Bike for the cost of four carbs with a bit of patience & luck. Then you can sell off the parts that you don't need, to finance the ones that you do need.

Make sure you buy or download a Manual & don't go cheap on any of the parts that you need to buy, like the Piston Rings, any Bearings, Seals & Gaskets. Pick up a new set of Rings & make sure that your Cylinder Bores are still within spec. No sense in building an engine with excessive Cylinder wear without boring it to the next size. If you're lucky, the Bores will still be within spec & only need a light honing to deglaze the walls & provide the proper cross-hatch surface to seat the Rings properly.

I have recently been introduced to: http://www.partzilla.com and have purchased a few parts from that site.

You should also look up forum member "ThatKid" (Here is his site: http://www.greenmachinecustoms.com/gmc/Home.html ) and ask him what type of parts he can source for you. Nathan has been very helpful to me. There may be other forum members who are parts dealers that can help you also, I'm just not aware of them. Maybe you should start a post asking who they are & what type of parts they sell.

Good luck on your Bike! It should be a very cool experience to build an Engine & Bike with your Dad. I wish I could spend more time with my Dad, but we live far apart now.

The title is free and clear! The cylinders as well have been measured and are in spec. I bought all of my bearings, gasket set, and piston rings recently. I still have a few parts to inspect but the project is coming along nicely so far. Slow and steady but ive been doing some work on my truck recently and are busy with work so it most likely will be next summer when this thing gets on the road.

Ahh... Excellent! Just keep plugging along & soon you will be riding it. Nothing as satisfying as riding or driving something that you have assembled & know that everything is correct & tight.
