Good Deal?

Post by Emberglo »

So, this ad came up in my local craigslist. Do you think it's a decent deal? I can probably get it for $1,000. Looks like it's missing fairings. It'll be my first bike, so I want something inexpensive I can learn on. I'm going to go check it out in an hour or so. Can't test ride it yet since I haven't gotten my permit, so is there anything I should look at?

Here's the ad: http://boise.craigslist.org/mcy/3772627501.html

Its ok, it is missing the lower fairings, not sure why he only replaced one tire, I usually always do the pair.

Cool. Thanks for the reply. I wonder if he couldn't find a rear locally. I'll ask. I noticed it was missing fairings and the rear ones are the wrong color. I'll have to ask about that too. As long as it runs well, it wouldn't be a rip off?

It probably needs a valve adjustment ($300+ if you have a dealer / mechanic do it) if it is hard starting when cold. Other than that, check the operation of all lights and turn signals. 2nd gear can be a problem on these bikes so I don't know how you would check that other than asking. Look for obvious leaks of any fluids. Have him start it and blip the throttle to see if it stutters. Also put your open hand about 3-6" behind the tail pipe and see if it is shooting out any bits of oil. That's a tough one to tell because it could just be normal crap in the tail pipe mixed with water (byproduct of combustion). Your call on that one.

The price seems reasonable and it does not look like a train wreck / basket case.

I would buy it for $1,000 watch eBay and be patient for good prices on parts and fairings.

Not a bad deal, I bought mine for $1000 and look how she cleaned up! I agree with everything they said above me, just be sure to check the forks as well. Hope you picked her up!
