FZRSupport: the FZROnline Archive

Just took it home yesterday. The dealer near me had an FZR that was in for a carb tuning and was knocked over. Instead of sorcing out a replacement side fairing (damage is actually not that bad) they purchased the bike off the owner. Otherwise it has been well taken care of. No major rust, Nicely tuned carbs, Vance & Hines exhaust and jet kit to suit, about 14500 miles.

Voltage regulator is on its way out, overcharged the battery a bit today and the headlights do the switching from dim to normal every couple minutes. I'm bringing it back to the dealer to have them address the vr.

Front brakes are the issue I may have to fix myself. The brakes pulsate. They don't exactly feel like warped rotors, but will bite, slip, bite, slip as you slow down, especially when going below 15mph. I cleaned them up good with some brake cleaner, tried lubing the bobbins a bit (no excess on rotors) but still same issue. Should I just look to finding new rotors?

If the rotors are pulsing is seems like they would be warped. Seems strange, but that's generally the symptoms as you described. Maybe check them with a straight edge first.

Replacing/Upgraded the VRR is pretty easy, you could save some $ by doing the work yourself.

Getting an updated VR (do a search, this is a very common upgrade) is simple if the dealer does not cover it for free.

You probably have material build up in spots on your rotors. Scrub both sides of your rotors (4 sides total) with a green scotch brite pad. You can also lighlty sand them with 600+ sandpaper. Also, lightly sand the pads too. Warped rotors are quite rare, most people don't realize that what they think is a warped rotor because of pulsating is actually from what I described.
