help! high idle issues

ok so I got my bike fired up and got it to idle with new plugs ngk cr8e's which are colder that the 7e's that were in the bike but it is still idling really high, like 3k rpm and if I adjust the idle adjustment knob it runs for about 10sec and dies... I know that the bike is supposed to idle between 1150 and 1250 rpm. what could cause that???

and my oil light is still on and I just changed the oil... would it stay on if there was to much oil in the crankcase or could it be the oil pump or just a loose wire somewhere???

Plug heat range will have no effect on idle.

let me repeat NO EFFECT.

You likely have an air leak if you cannot get it to settle down on idle. think intake manifolds, poor seal of carb to them, and or old cracking manifolds.

Is the oil at the proper level in the sight glass window? The level is to be checked when bike is upright (not on sidestand) The light is an oil LEVEL light-not pressure.

so if there is too much would the light come on??

and I know for sure that one of my intake manis has some slight cracks in it probably because of age and weathering.... is it hard to get new ones?? or is there and easy DIY/redneckish way to fix it??

and by redneck I don't mean duct tape... lol

Nope. The switch 'makes' when there isn't enough oil, but breaks when the level reaches some desired minimum. Adding oil past some maximum doesn't turn it back on.

Boil them in a crockpot full of good-quality coolant. It'll soften them up, perhaps enough to close small cracks.

Overnight, and probably not. For that matter you probably don't want to use that crockpot for food. Either buy the Missus a new one, or get a battered one off Craigslist.

Fresh, proper strength coolant. If the stuff in your jug is supposed to be cut 50/50, do that.

i bought these from this guy last year.
http://www.georgefixs.com/servlet/the-7 ... AKE/Detail

$100 but it's for all 4, so it's not too bad. TEST: with the bike running spray some starter fluid around each of the boots, and listen for a change in the RPMs. If Spraying Starter Fluid around them changes the RPMs you definitely have a leak. If not, your boots might no be the issue....

Another thing to suspect is dirty Carbs; a clogged pilot jet (tiny orifice) might cause this. At higher RPM (increased vacuum) your bike might be getting some fuel from the Needle Jets; where as at lower RPM (less vacuum) clogged pilot jets might not be providing enough fuel.

Important: You must adjust your idle speed with the bike fully warmed up. Adjusting it while cold will not work.
