FZRSupport: the FZROnline Archive

As some of you may have figured out by now, I am attempting to revive a 1993 FZR 600 from its deep sleep that it has been in for the last...oh, 7 years or so. (my, time does go by) Right now I'm getting my shop prepped (which means insulated and a natural gas heating unit) ready for this project, which I plan on doing this winter whilst there is nothing much else to do in the frozen wastelands of Iowa. As you have filled my head with a bunch of killer mods and ideas you have done, I'm getting really itchy to start this project.

As I think about how to tackle this project, I figure I will need a way to to move my bike around until I get the thing back on its own legs. Normally when I start a project, regardless of how small it is, I will end up with parts scattered about and doing much more than I had initially planned. Given a warm environment and nothing much else to do with my free time (please don't mention this to my wife) It's hard to tell where I will end up with this restoration/rebuild/God only knows project.

Given this tendency I have to tear apart all things mechanical, I am looking into making or buying a dolly to move the bike around when its disabled. As space is sometimes an issue, I'd like to be able to move it around in the garage. I know with the exhaust running under the bike its a hassle to get a solid mount for a stand, and was wondering if there were any around here that have a good solution on a dolly. I've thought about making one out of wood, seeing how we are doing a remodel on the house right now and lumber is in abundance, but personally I'd rather have one made out of metal.

So, if anyone here knows of a good place to buy one, or has plans or pictures of one they are using or knows will work, I'd sure appreciate a posting.

Whilst a nice toy to have for general purposes, you will find that it leaves the bike unstable with the rear / front wheel off for instance.

My good friend got round this by putting on ourriggers to use as anchor points for tie downs to keep the bike stable.

The dis-advantage to that idea was many painful knocked elbows / ships on the outriggers.

My own personal choice was a paddock stand that inserted thro the triple tree central hole (no good on harleys as they are blocked on some models) & an auto engine lift with a ratched tie down thro the rear seat supports to raise the back end level with the front.


This does allow swing arm / suspension swaps, but not the removal or exchange of sub frames .

No doubt the the phrase service puzzle is accurate. I've got the HF lift and have u-bolts inverted on the deck to act as anchor points no stability issues there. And I have paddock stands (front stem stand most importantly). No stability issues there either. I will even use them in conjunction with one another. There is no silver bullet for service stands for these bikes. My paddock stands go above my garage when not in use and the HF lift collapses low enough to park my SUV's over it as I also have space constraints like others.

For a lot of money you can add to the lift but for just the general means of working on the bike its the way to go. Easy to roll it around as well. You could always suspend the front and rear from the ceiling of the garage if needed to pull the front or rear end off the bike temporarily. I have one, and I love it. Of course, I get something used every month to put on it as well.

Thanks for the suggestions, while I do need to get a lift, I was really looking for the stability of a dolly when the front and rear wheels are off, and with a dolly I can use the lift to work on other bikes I have.

It doesn't really surprise me the Fizzer is hard to get mounted on a stand, and though there might be an ingenious prototype of a solution to the issue someone here might of figured out. With the talent I've seen in the mods and upgrades here, there are some pretty sharp minds working things out. I suppose I can take some measurements and tackle the job myself, (I've got a good friend with a metalworking shop in his garage, and I used to weld professionally when younger) if I can get both him and myself pinned down for time. If/when I get things built, I'll post some pictures.
