I was heading down hill in 3 gear and went to shift to forth and it reved up and didnt catch, so I shifted back to third and same thing and so forth as a slowed down and finally stopped. I pulled off to the side of the road and started the bike engine sounded fine, went to put it in first, released the clutch and all it did was rev up, no power to the wheel. I thought I had burnt my clutch so I pulled the plates out they look fine to me, they are black and smell like oil not really burnt ( but then again i dont really know what a burnt clutch smells like). I can run my finger across the plates and fill the indentions between the lil squares. so i dont know what wrong.
I use my bike pretty much every day.. what could it be?... I looked at the clutch plates as I pulled in the clutch lever and it would move in and out. so im kinda of stuck , it wont catch any gears, and i can push the bike as its in gear and i hear a scratching sound does anyone have suggestions let me know

Verily, I say
Thou must removest thine front sprocket cover
Hidden behindeth it, ye shall behold your front sprocket (countershaft sprocket)
Alas, said sprocket mayhaps be freely spinnning....yay, verily so, as commonly witnessed by vast multitudes before you:
thine countershaft retentiion nut has escaped it's binds.
It may or may not have completely gone missing.
Luck upon your venture and godspeed, aye.

ok thanks i didnt even think of that, i mean i did repleace the front sprocket myself and maybe didnt indent the holder as much as it needed, or maybe it just warped from me riding so hard.. but i did take in the cutch to the shop and they told me with out a second glance that it was doneskeez... but if i change that and still have the issue and its not the retentsion nut or the clutch what would be my next option to check?

should have did this and checked, i didnt check it becuase the clutch looked burnts out.. but yes the front sprocket lock nut had fallen off and the spocket was freely moving, do anyone know the dimenson on this lock nut, so i can try and find one at the local hardwear store rather then pay 10 bucks for a new one and wait three more days...

It is 18mm x1.25 pitch but as you will have found is not freely available plus is also a special shape/thickness.
The rebate goes towards splines on the lockwasher which MUST be fitted correctly or you will be going back fo another nut next week!

Reelrazor is asking;
Did you adjust the clutch pushrod clearance .?
The small crosshead screw and locknut that is behind the rubber bung on the outside of the front sprocket cover .

You CANNOT overtighten them..... they have shoulders that stop them from threading too far.
Well, okay, yes, you CAN overtighten them....in that you apply too much torque and you SNAP the boss that the springs thread into right off of the clutch hub.
