Y-Geo is talking about a magneto system..it's not truly total loss as there is NO lighting/accessory wiring-hence no need for a battery and it's wiring-or DC voltage for that matter.

It's called magneto in at least 20million engines worldwide (Briggs and Stratton, Tecumseh et al.-and every full-on dirtbike out there), it can be point and condenser, or solid state, monobloc or multipart...all it needs is a permanent magnet on a rotating assembly and a 'self powered' inductive coil.

everyone else is talking 'total loss' as the rest of the world sees it........

No provisions for recharging/maintenance voltage...start with a charged battery, end with a discharged one (whether you want to or not).

YG - I'm familiar myself with magneto / battery-less ignitions; my TZ uses such a thing. The point currently under argument is that the term "total loss" ignition is apparently used by far more people (in my experience, olie's, and that of an extensive Google search) to refer to a battery-powered system with no provision for re-charging, than to describe a battery-less charging system that drives the ignition directly.

I'm not saying you're wrong anymore than I'm right, but it may be that the term has changed in 30-odd years.
