Re: Shred fixed my IMS question, Videos (3/29/10) won't fire.

I didn't try putting the old filter back on because when I took it off the nipple broke off. So that's a no go. There is no bubbles or anything in the filter, when I take the hose off of the carb and try turning on the key the pump will shoot gas out about a foot. I can try blowing it out too. I'm about the take the carbs apart and put them back together carefully and then try to start her in the morning when it will be 60 degrees. Try to ride her to work. But we shall see.

Also I did the 24 mm card and it looks to me like mine are a few mm under. I wasn't exactly sure how to adjust them to be out a little farther. Pushing lightly on the metal piece that the needle hangs on produced no results.

I would honestly say you are worrying too much about the float height... I seriously doubt that's y it is not starting.

Have you checked your coil packs? getting spark to each cylinder?? Ohm out your wires also... This can all be seen in the manual in my signature.

i figured it wasn't that big of a deal too. Since it was like that for the last 8000 miles and I never had a problem. I didn't check the coil packs yet. It was next on the list. I will do the ohm and everything. I don't really want to do the escort swap because I don't want to go to pods. But I know I'm getting spark to each cylinder. I took them all off and checked, cleaned, and looked for gas on the plugs. Might get new ones anyway since they are like 4$ each.
Thanks for the link I'll check that out.

Used the manual to check the Ohms. got 2.7 and 2.8. The manual says 1.8-2.2. So just wondering is this is too far out of spec. Funny thing is it was actually 68 degrees when I tested it. Just like the manual said. The bike might have been a little cooler from being in the garage.

Didn't get anywhere today either. I ran completely out of starter fluid yesterday, and it seems like she wants to fire even less. Cranks all day and if I put the choke on (or if I have the choke off and give her a little twist on the throttle) the bike seems to crank faster.

Went and bought new plugs, even though I didn't think I needed them. Apparently I did. She fired and I even got the carbs synced. Took her for a spin to see what I needed to tweek. She runs kinda rough and makes a sound like a jake brake. Kinda bogs down when I first get on the gas. All in all a step in the right direction.

Good luck. I recall that you went with a jet kit but I don't remember off the top of my head if you are putting pods on or not. I've heard that there is some serious fine tuning with the pods.

Chris.

Well. Diagnosis from the ride today. At idle after about 5 min, the exhaust temps in order 1-4 were. 120, 490, 117, 650. Then I went for a 10 min ride to the bank. When I got off the throttle the bike died on me(3 times). So when I got back to work I checked the temps again. 380, 270, 370, 450. So from the first temps, and along with the fact that i think it sounds like a cyl wasn't firing, it seems like maybe the coil that fires 1 and 3 isn't working the best. If I start the bike with the choke on it doesn't even go above 2k.

Long story short anyone think coils, or if I adjust the Idle Mixture Screws, do you think that would help? I'm thinking not. Also throwing out, if i blip the throttle it will choke out like it might die. Hmmm.

Since the coils are 1-4 and 2-3, if the coil for 1-3 is wrong, you're running on 2 cyls... Check that your caps are 1) each on the right plus(s), and 2) that the caps are firmly attached to the HT wires.

I'm 99% sure the caps are tight on the wires and plugs. I've taken them out 4 times in 2 days. I did do something that I maybe should not have done. I put dielectric grease when the HT wires go into the boots. It made them slippery, but i checked to make sure they were tight. Now as far as the wires from the coil being right. I've never replaced them and they are numbered 1..2..3..4. Guess something could have gone wrong.

Is it possible that those 2 cyl are just not getting enough fuel and if I increase the IMS that it would help out?
