Man, I just can't get the thought out of my head of "stubbing" my toe while on a motorcycle. I mean it hurts like a :swear even when you don't grind it to a stump... *shudder*

Keep in mind what I was talking about earlier, I NEVER go on long rides in flip flops, i have before and rocks hurt. When i wear the flip flops it's because it's hawaii and nearly everyone wears flip flops and shorts. i'm only going a mile or two, maybe four, but not far, plus i wear flip flops and shorts at work because it's cooler that shoes and pants.

So if i'm only going a few miles on 25mph roads (going 35 - 45).. should I wear shoes, jeans, gloves, longsleeves, and my leather jacket, while keeping my flip flops and shorts in a backpack? To me thats just retarded.

Just for the record, my normal wear when i go on a long ride is my riding jacket (if it's a hot day) or just my leather jacket if its a night ride, shoes, jeans, and a helmet (as always). But just no gloves.

By the way, this thread has gone on long enough, and this is my last post here, i've said all i have to say, if you guys feel comfortable wearing your protective gear while going 2 miles and bashing someone that doesn't then thats your thing.

Wear what you want. It's your neck. The problem is not necessarily you the rider, but you have to be prepared since you're not wrapped in a steel casing. People in cars don't always see riders. Be careful out there.

That being said, I'm with Tommy that I think he's been beat on enough. Welcome to the FZR community... :headscratch:

You guys let Madison off easier. screwy

I wear jeans / tennis shoes when I head downtown, about 6 miles away. I have a Mesh Jacket, which is worthless, by the way, that I also wear. It does have some armor in it, but I'm certain that the mesh will just melt to my skin if I ever slid.

It's a risk we all take. We have to make our own choices, but we also have to accept the responsibility if/when something does happen.

The guys here are more sensitive to the safety issue than most. I'd rather have people who care enough than others who encourage unsafe practices.

Too many times I see on other forums about people who have died not wearing proper attire and not necessarily going very fast. They are forgotten in a week. Don't be a statistic. This goes for everyone.

My friend low sided in a mesh jacket and slid a good 75 feet before hitting a stone wall (feet first, almost stopped, he got lucky). The jacket was definitely trashed but it did it's job. Those mesh jackets are kind of like those foam bicycle helmets, they're one time use disposable items that provide the minimum level of protection to save your ass. The jacket (Icon btw) did not melt at all. it was all frayed up and had some holes but the only rash my buddy got was just below the wrist where the sleeve rode up a bit.

Match, I'm not trying to bash you but your reasoning is freaking awful. Basically you're saying it's ok because everyone wears flip flops and shorts. I should hope I don't need to explain the problem there. Furthermore the whole story you started this thread out with should be an eye opener, but for some reason (and I'm biting my tongue here, hard), it's lost on you. Suppose your foot had ended up in a slightly different location when the bike came down and the brake lever, with the weight of the falling bike, came down on your foot. Ambulance please. If you think that it was your skill that prevented it from happening, wake up, it was dumb luck. When things go bad, they happen so fast that your lucky to get a single conscious reaction before your body becomes simply a captive link in the kinematic chain.

I'm trying not to harp, really. I'm just trying to save you from your terrible choices.

Match, I think you're reading into this the wrong way. The people here aren't bashing you per say, they're concerned. That's all.. And I'm in the same boat as them. It doesn't matter whether I'm riding 2 minutes or 2 hours, after my accident last year I don't care anymore, my boots, jacket, and gloves are on all the time.. Helmet is law here so that's never an issue.

Just a little insight as to what happened to me. I'm 30 years old, married and have 1 kid with another on the way. I owned my first bike when I was 18.. Then after a long time off I got the FZR400 in April of 2007. I had a blast.. riding with a t-shirt, shorts, the odd time without gloves, etc.. So last July I was heading out to a family outing when I hit a piece of steel on the road.. I broke both wrists, my right hand had 5 or 6 broken bones across the back of it and my thumb nearly snapped completely apart.. In fact I just found out today that I need more surgery in it because the thumb isn't completely back in the joint and that the tendon has disappeared and needs to be replaced. That's got a 70% success rate apparently and if it doesn't work, then my thumb will have to be fused to the hand at the joint where it usually goes which will all but remove any circular rotation permanently of the thumb.. And that was wearing gloves..

I haven't even mentioned the surgery on my shoulder that I had to repair it in April.. I may have to have more as the repairs didn't take and it's re-seperated..

Now, this all happened wearing a T-shirt, gloves, regular shoes (which were'nt tied tight either) and a helmet. I had road-rash on my arms & my back pretty bad where I couldn't sleep in a bed for almost a week. I was in casts for almost 2 months on BOTH arms.. I'm still attending physiotherapy and my old job has officially been written off as of this morning finding out the issue with my hand was worse than I had originally thought.. As confirmed by a surgeon.

I always thought it was cool because I saw everyone else riding with t-shirts, shorts, etc.. Never again. I now ride with a mesh jacket, gloves all the time, and riding boots. I always ride with pants, but they're not true motorcycle pants. I'm still working on that.

Don't think of this as bashing you, we just don't want to see you end up in bad shape.

LOL..like that lasted

Honestly guys, I have been thinking about it since this discussion started. Maybe wearing full protective gear when going 2 miles is a bit excessive, but it's not a bad habit to have. I have started wearing a T-shirt a lot on the freeway instead of t-shirt and jacket and I probably wear the jacket..i don't know, not even half the time now. Even though i don't ride around doing stunts, and speed through traffic weaving in and out of cars, I have had people change lanes on me on the freeway and I've avoided it ok, but one day i might not see a car when they do it. Like I said, i never wear shorts on the freeway, but sometimes flip flops if i'm just getting on there for a minute. And I did come away with a small gash on my middle left toe from the incident last week. It didn't hurt when it happened and i didn't notice it until later. I think the bike fell on my foot when i slipped in the oil trying to pick it up. I think the bone is bruised too because the cut is scabbed up well, but it's still sore when i touch it. Anyway, maybe I should wear more when I ride. So thanks for looking out guys

And about pictures..i told a girl i'd take her out on the bike once that engine cover gets here. So i'll try to see if she'll snap some pictures while we're out cruising around.

Here I go :deadhorse:

'A repost of my arm 1 year later now. Mesh jackets are o.k for putting around town. I would never wear one again at highway speeds. A dead cow is man's best friend. Lecture over. Aloha. :shocker

exactly..lol

she was all excited when she texted me today and said she wanted to work on her tan in a bathing suit while we're riding around this sunday..first of all, that's awesome..but uh, not exactly the safest thing to do, there is no way i'd let her wear that little thing riding around for 2 hours, i've already talked her out of it.
