Con rod bearing size.
I know I have posted on here about bearing sizes before. I have been told to plastigauge my bearings to find out if they are still good or not. I would do that but cant really do it. Because the engine was pulled apart about a year ago by my buddy for me while I am on deployment. When I first started talking about just rebuilding the motor becuase I had a loss of some low end power. We found that the rings were bad and then I came across the idea of building a 660. So we started pulling more apart. He got the rods out and put the bearings in a coffee can in his shed. But unknown to him the shed had a slight leak. A some point over the 8 months or so that they sat in the can it rained enough and the can filled up about 1/4 or so with water and sat there until December when I came home and took everything to my house to clean and try to get as much done as I could. He lost the time to keep up with the build when he picked up a second job. The bearings had some rust on them which I thought was just surface rust but as I took emry cloth to it I noticed pitting in the bearing surface. So instead of trying to get it perfect again and hope they are still good after a lot of work I belileve it is best interest to just replace them. The problem is that I can not find anything markig the size. I know that they are sorted by color but there is no color stamp the only thing that I can find is "F-780 NDC" stamped into the outside of the shell. I have been looking all over the place and nothing has came up. Does any one know where else I could find out which bearings go in it or where the color stamp should be? Any help would be great.

Re: Con rod bearing size.
Do you have the manual? Look at pp 4-39 and 4-40; the procedure is there.

Re: Con rod bearing size.
I have a manual. but not with me. I have the bearings, rods, wrist pins, and pistons in my locker right now floating some where off of Japan. The rest of the engine and everything I have to go with it and the books are sitting in the shed in water tight containers. I didnt want to take a chance on water getting in something else harder or more expensive to replace.
Re: Con rod bearing size.
There are numbers hard stamped on the left crank web and crank case, and inked on each conrod. The difference between the numbers for each position determines the shell selection according to a small chart in the manual.

Re: Con rod bearing size.
Thank you Ill have to see if my buddy can pull the engine out of the crate it is in and get me those numbers. have the rods so I can check them there. Just to make sure I got this right. The numbers on the case or the crank? Are they the same number? I take the numbers from each rod and subtract them from the numbers on the engine and reference it to a chart in the manual and that is going to give me each individual rod bearing size?
Re: Con rod bearing size.
There are 5 numbers on the cases. There are 9 numbers on the crank; the first 5 are used with the case numbers to size the journal bearings. The last 4 are used with the rods.

Re: Con rod bearing size.
I think I understand...
. But I sent the info to my buddy so that when he gets a chance he can take a look at it and get the right numbers for me. I just hope to have all the machine work done and parts at the house by the time I transfer back state side and can get her back on the road while i am on leave and do a good ride before the temp drops too low. But she is in Florida so it never stays cold hahaha. And thank you for the help.
