headlight problems

I am having a strange headlight problem. Sometimes my headlights will work and other times they will not work at all a long with my gauge cluster lights. I am thinking it is some kind of short. I have no idea where to start can someone help me out.

There are two likely culprits - the headlight High/Low switch on the left grip cluster, and the Start button on the right grip cluster; the start button breaks the headlight circuit (including the dash lights) to ensure max amps are available to the starter motor and coils. Over time these get gummed up, corroded, or become snug homes for cocoons. Strip them and clean them; watch out for the little springs and detent balls - they like to go SPROING! at the least convenient time possible.
