No Shift

Post by Dumbjer »

After installing a new chain and sprockets on my project bike, I noticed that the front sprocket spins freely. The bike is in neutral, so I didn't think much about it. But when I tried to take it out of neutral, the shift shaft going into the motor would not move. I can yank on the shifter up and down, but no movement or noise at all. I've had the motor running, but there is no odd noises.

Am I going to need separate the engine case? or could this be remedied from the clutch side?

Thanks in advance.

First question: Was everything working before you changed the sprockets and chain?

I bought it from a guy who bought it as a parts bike that was running at the point when it was stored. I believe we had to put it into neutral when we loaded it into the truck. But I have never ridden it.

Also, I have another motor that has a bad head, but good transmission, how labor intensive is it to swap heads?

Can you sit on the bike, rock it back and forward, pull in the clutch and try to shift with your toe?

Check that you have aligned the gearshift linkage correctly in the shaft splines.

GREAT NEWS!

After perusing the Yamaha shop manual, I decided to pull the clutch cover off and inspect the opposite end ofthe shift shaft to see if there was anything obviously out of place. And right away noticed that the return spring was not positioned correctly, both ends of the spring were on one side of the post inside. Removed the shift shaft and inserted one from another motor whose spring looked intact. And it works great! Thanks for the advice everyone!
