Tach signal pulses?

Post by hawcer »

I have a new replacement digital gauge set waiting to be wired up on my bike and I have a question I would like to find the answer to before I get started.

How many pulses per revolution does the factory tach wire(gray wire) supply to the factory tach?

My instructions state to hook the new tack lead wire to the control side of the Ign coil , But since this is a waste spark system, I'm guessing that will send two pulses per revolution. This new tach gauge requires one pulse per revolution.

I'm really hoping the factory tach wiring only sends one pulse per revolution. if not I'll have to do things a bit different.

I've been slowly working on a streetfighter project and I have a thread on it in the streetfighter section of the forums here, so I have a little bit of info in there too. Once I get this thing installed and working, I'll do a write-up with some pics if anyone is interested.

Thanks!

Hmmm.... might read up on the r6/r1 dash swap. Might be helpful.

I did, but I don't recall seeing what the factory tach signal pulse is per revolution.

The grey (2-3) signal wire has 1 pulse per rev = 2 pulses per cycle.

Sounds good!
I'm going to solder the original harness connector leads onto the new gauge today while I'm at work. Hopefully all I'll have to do is plug it in and all will be well.

Any one know the ohms range of the factory temp sender? I see this as being my next hurdle. The temp is just a bar graph on the gauge display, so it doesn't have to be perfect....but I'd like it to be close.

Any good ideas to use the fuel level display for on the new gauge? without the gauge getting a signal it doesn't even show up on the display, I guess that's a good thing.

Thanks!

I plugged her in last night and every thing is operational :D
The indicator lights are super bright...I will now have to get a tinted shield for my helmet,LOL

I think I'll be adding a 15 ohm resistor in the temp sender circuit so it will read correctly. My best guess on the factory sender range is in the ball park of 500 ohms-2 ohms.
I have one bar showing on the display when the bike is cold, which is acceptable, but since it needs to see a 17ohms resistance to ground when full hot, I will add a 15 ohms resister to the circuit that will add to the 2 ohms of the sender when full hot to make it read a little more accurately. If not it will probably read full hot when the factory gauge would normally only be reading about half gauge.

It's not like it has to be perfect, the new gauge doesn't have a numeral readout of actual temperature...just a bar graph.

No numbers on the OEM gauge either. It's basically just a round bar gauge ...

yep, exactly. So as long as I can get the new gauge to be close, it'll be fine.

I was thinking of what i could use the fuel gauge on the new cluster for...but I can'teven get it to do anything. if I short it to ground, nothing. if I connect it to power it freaks out the whole cluster....so I guess that wire will just get taped off. When I was testing the wires the other day I could get a fuel level reading, but I have no idea how I did it,LOL. I was kind of hoping to use it to pick up a feedback signal off the fuel pump. So when the fuel pump was running it would "peg" the gauge...kind of a warning meter on the fuel pump output.

oh well...
