FZR600 Helicopter for sale on eBay

Post by Clanky »

Just saw this for sale this morning. A home built helicopter powered by an FZR600 engine WOOT

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Helicopter-Ya ... 19dd0bac7b

I think I'm going to give it a pass (don't fancy having second gear issues or worn emulsion tube problems at 1000 feet) :yikes:

There's always auto-rotation!

Pretty damn cool in my book

I think it is pretty cool. They could have used a lighter engine that spins a lot higher than the FZR but as long as it works, it's good.

i kinda got to wonder how they set it up.... are there gears? clutching and gears while flying seem like a recipe for disaster

Naw, I'm betting they shaved the whole gearbox off. Says "twin belt drive"...I'm thinking it's a torque coverter clutch (snowmobile style) driving a right angle gearbox.

Toss out all the transmission shafts and gears and the FZR 600 engine IS pretty light. It is also a lot torquier than many more modern 600s

I was being a bit flippant earlier about the gear changes, helicopters have fixed gear boxes and the pitch of the blades is used to control the power output from the engine or something like that.

RR - Looks like auto rotation wouldn't have time to get a look in on this one, I don't think it has got above 10' yet :grinnod:

I'm certainly not trying to knock the guy's efforts after all it's people like him that invent cool new stuff. Here's an old thread from elsewhere that gives some more info, pics/video, on this project:

I just hope he's replaced his VR if it's pre 95, that'd be a gut dropping moment when the gauges start to dim.
