Replaced Speedo Cable. Feels Slower Than Reading

Post by KillerCobra »

Hey guys I just replaced my speedo cable on my 97 FZR600 and feel like it says I'm going faster than I am. Is there a way to check this or recalibrate it or something?

If you have a smart phone then just use the GPS on that. If not, time yourself at a steady 60 mph. It should take 60 seconds to go 1 mile based on the mile markers on the highway, not your odometer.

Good thinking on the timing. Is there a way to securely mount my phone in sight on my bike? Any time I go somewhere new I have to take my car so I can use my GPS.

Many tank bags have clear windows on top for viewing phones/gps

That's what I've been using on my GSXR for years

There's also laptimer apps (Racechrono for example) where you will not have to look at the phone at all. It will record your speeds and even plot your route.

The other thing you can do is set up a video. Just look at the timing between mile markers or if there's not date / time display on the video, time it at home. Try to get the speedo in the shot so you know how fast you were going.

If you can't get the speedo and the mile markers in the shot, just get the speedo in the shot and wave your hand in front of the camera when you pass a mile marker.

You could get Mrs Cobra to drive in front in the car and tell her to wave at 40, 50, 60 etc and compare what you're getting on the FZ
If it ain't broke, fiddle with it until it is.

So if the speedo is fast than actual speed. that means miles go on faster right? meaning there is actually more miles on the odometer than there actually is on our bikes. and also means we aren't getting as good of gas mileage as calculated because the speedo put more miles on the trip than we actually rode...?

Completely normal. It's gonna be off by a percentage....that percentage will not vary with speed. (example: if it's off 10%, then at 30mph..it reads 33..at 60mph it reads 66)..
