1st gear and neutral only??? Help!

Post by Wurrukatte »

Hi guys...
I'm new here to the forum and am having an interesting problem... and I've searched the forums hear to death and have not found the same issue yet.
.
My FZR600 will only go into first and neutral. 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th all read as neutral when trying to up-shift. (pretty much... I only have 1st gear)
.
Is there a typical problem that causes this?
I just found a steal of a deal and bought the bike (MOTOR IS SOLID AS HELL) from someone for $165.00.
:)
Although it needs a an OEM fuel pump... Tranny is the only problem.
Any thoughts on why I'd only be getting 1st?

You either have a SERIOUSLY broken transmission (to the tune of rotating shrapnel that should be making a horrid noise), or your shift mechanism is twisted like a pretzel. :yikes:

When you try to shift past neutral to 2/3/4/5/6, what happens? Does it click into position? Does it grind like a rookie trucker? Does it feel like you're trying to lift the bike with your toe? Does it just sit there and flap a bit?

The good lord willin' and the creek don't rise, it's your shift mechanism - this can be repaired with the engine in the bike; you just have to drain the oil, pull the preliminary parts, then lay the bike on its left side to finish the fixing.

A transmission job entails pulling the engine and tearing it down to the crank. banghead

When I try to shift it isn't too hard to move. It just reads neutral and neutral only.
No grinding, no noise or even chatter of any kind while riding down the road in 1st.
Doesn't flap at all.
It's really odd to me. It's like the bike is a one-speed.
Thanks for the help...
I'm hoping it's the shift mechanism. I have all the guts (pristine condition) to refurbish the entire tranny if nessassary, but I'd rather not.
I also have a new set of shift forks and drum on the way.

Just a long shot, had the same problem back in the 70,s on a kwaka 250 after changing front sprocket. I had not lined up the gear linkage correctly. Bob.
