What hooks to these tubes?

Post by idahofzr »

I have a '93 Fzr 600 I bought with most of the parts in a box. I'm stumped with these tubes coming off the carbs. Have looked at parts diagrams and haven't figured it out. I want this bike on the road. Please help!Thank you in advance :)Image

Those are your bowl breathers, and are just there to keep the pressure in the bowls at ambient atmospheric. It's this pressure that pushes the fuel up the jets into the vacuum of the carb throat.

I do believe they are simply some type of breather tube. They point up when installed. Nothing attaches to them.

That's good. You must know your stuff. I am very impressed I honestly believe no one would give this answer. Everyone calls these your overflow tubes. Lol, which is funny because nothing should be overflowing :) I really am impressed. Much respect.

Oh, Mistah J, how you do go on! (You know stuff's getting weird when a guy from Northern Ontario starts channeling a psycho Southern Belle ...)

Actually, for some engines they DO act as overflow tubes, when the float needles get stuck and the owner forgot to close the petcock - fuel pours out onto the ground instead of into the engine. Unfortunately, being downdraft carbs, the units on the FZR have the breather higher than the main jet, so the fuel pours out the main jet and into whichever cyl is in the 'Intake' position, filling the crankcase, diluting the oil and hydrolocking the engine. Just an all-around sucky situation ...

Aaaaggghhhh!!!!! I could have been riding this bike? lmao Deep down I had this terrible feeling it was going to be something that would make me look like an idiot. Okay, well; I guess I can put it back together and put it on the road. I gave this kid $200 for the bike. The tires are almost new and chain and sprockets too.

Thanks a bunch guys. I appreciate you guys letting me know how dumb I really am. :)

That was not a stupid question at all. If you weren't sure you would be dumb if you didn't ask. I have been working and repairing motorcycles fo so long I don't recall a time when I didn't. I still ask questions constantly that could be considered dumb. They really are not, that's how you learn. I figure you know what they truly do now. That's better than %99.99 percent that have these tubes on their bike and they don't know what they do. That is not stretching the thruth when I say %99.99 percent. You should feel damn good for knowing what they do. Also thanks fo Dontz for knowing and explaining.

Just to be sure, I actually have these two breather ports routed down to the belly pan on my track bike.

I haven't done it yet, but I need to put the tubes on still. Lol half my bike was missing. What would you expect for a hundred dollar bike?

Just to be clear, when Darrin says "pointed up", he means that the open end of the tube should be pointing down, not like they are in the picture. The tube should look like an upside down letter J. You probably understood what he meant but I'm a dummy and need things painfully spelled out for me.
